Biography

Soni Razdan is a British filmmaker and actress who primarily works in Hindi movies. She is the mother of Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt; she is married to director Mahesh Bhatt.

With John Fowler’s The Collector and Bund Darvaze an adaptation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit respectively, Soni Razdan launched her stage careers in English and Hindi respectively. 

In the popular Doordarshan TV series Buniyaad, she later played the role of Sulochana. She also appeared in the Hindi TV shows Gaatha and Saahil. Her works include Yours Truly (2001) Monsoon Wedding (2001) and Raazi (2018). Mahesh Bhatt is her husband.

She is a well-known Bollywood and Hollywood actress. Razdan has amassed an enormous reputation and recognition as a successful director in the entertainment sector.

Razdan was raised in Bombay Maharashtra India. He was born in Small Heath Birmingham West Midlands England. She was born to a British-German mother Gertrude Hoelzer and an Indian Kashmiri Pandit father Narendra Nath Razdan.

On April 20, 1986, Razdan married Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt. Bhatt and Razdan converted to Islam before getting married and they had a very private nikah ceremony since Bhatt did not want to divorce his first wife. 

Soni selected the name Sakina as her Muslim name after converting to Islam. She is the stepmother of Rahul Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt the aunt of Emraan Hashmi and the mother of Shaheen Bhatt (born November 28, 1988) and actress Alia Bhatt (born March 15, 1993).

Education

She enrolled in the London School of Acting and then came to India with the goal of pursuing an acting career. From a young age, the actress had a great enthusiasm for acting. The actress has a lot of acting talent because she trained at a reputable acting school.

Marriage

Mahesh first met Soni Razdan who was just starting out as an actor while they were both working on the Saaransh movie. Mahesh and Soni had been secretly dating before getting married in 1986.

Alia and Shaheen Bhatt their two daughters were a blessing. Despite being Pooja Bhatt’s stepmother Soni Razdan has a close relationship with Alia and Shaheen. 

Pooja shared how Soni had acknowledged her guilt in marrying Mahesh Bhatt in a throwback interview with India Today. But it was Pooja’s response to Soni that gave her confidence in her choice. In order to calm Soni Pooja revealed that her father’s previous marriage to Lorraine was already over.

Mahesh continued to be legally married to Lorraine despite their separation because he didn’t want to alienate Rahul and Pooja. Mahesh had changed his faith in order to wed Soni in a covert ceremony because he was unable to divorce Lorraine. 

Pooja Bhatt said in an interview with Stardust magazine that Mahesh told her about his romance with Soni Razdan before her mother or anyone else. Pooja has previously mentioned in the same interview how she used to despise Soni for kidnapping her father. And it was Lorraine her mother who had softened her resentment of Soni.

Career in film

Ahista Ahista (1981)

In October 1981 the Hindi movie Ahista Ahista was released. In addition to Shammi Kapoor, the movie also features Nanda Kunal Kapoor Padmini Kolhapure Shashikala Ashalata Wabgaonkar and Rehman.

The film’s soundtrack was its best aspect. ‘Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammal Jahan Nahin Milta’ (twice) ‘Maana Teri Nazar Mein ” ‘Bin Bulaaye Hum Chale Aaye” and ‘Nazar Se Phool Chunti Hai Nazar’ were all warmly embraced by the music enthusiasts. The 1969 Kannada film Gejje Pooje which Puttanna Kanagal directed served as the inspiration for this movie.

Courtesan men are not born but they are welcome at Madame Subbalaxmi’s home. Although they give birth women are not welcome. Sangeeta Subbalaxmi’s protege delivers a baby girl whom they name Chandra and Subbalaxmi is overjoyed. They moved to a tiny town shortly after that. 

Chandra is permitted to pursue her academic interests as Sangeeta requests. Chandra is greeted by Kunal her next-door neighbor and their family. When Kunal and Chandra fall in love issues arise since neither Chandra’s courtesan family nor Kunal’s family will agree to this marriage.

Saaransh (1984)

Anupam Kher Rohini Hattangadi Madan Jain Nilu Phule Suhas Bhalekar and Soni Razdan appear in the 1984 Indian Hindi drama Saaransh which was directed by Mahesh Bhatt.

In it, an old Maharashtrian couple who reside in Mumbai learns to cope with the death of their only son. 

Anupam Kher made his acting debut in this film. Lyrics by Vasant Dev and Ajit Verman provided the music for the movie. Rajshri Productions developed and distributed it.

Although it was selected as India’s official submission for the 1985 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film it did not receive a nomination.

On Wings Of Fire (1986)

In the 1986 English-language Indian film On Wings of Fire directed by Cyrus Bharucha and starring Zubin Mehta Paul Shelley Saeed Jaffrey and Amrish Puri Nigel Terry plays Zarathustra and Derek Jacobi plays the narrator. It is the first and only movie to present Zoroastrianism’s philosophy and background in a scholarly and engaging manner. The movie had its world premiere at Mumbai’s Sterling Cinema in June 1986 and it was distributed in the US in 2001.

The historical narrative of Zoroastrianism and the prophet Zarathushtra spans 3500 years of Indian Parsis and Zoroastrians. The plot opens with the conductor Zubin Mehta the movie’s central character a Westernized Parsi who travels to his home country to learn more about his ancestry while also learning about the history of his people.

Daddy (1989)

The 1989 television movie Daddy was produced for Doordarshan. Pooja Bhatt Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter made her acting debut in this movie which he also directed. Anupam Kher and Manohar Singh who play the key roles give outstanding performances in the movie. It includes Talat Aziz’s well-known ghazal “Aaina Mujhe Meri Pehli Si Surat Maange.” In a coincidental turn of events, Mahesh Bhatt’s film Dhun was presented to Talat Aziz. The movie hasn’t yet been released though.

This film opens with a picture of its star Anand Sarin (Anupam Kher). More information regarding the cause of his alcoholism is revealed gradually as the plot develops and with Pooja’s love and encouragement, he is eventually able to beat it.

Gumrah (1993)

Mahesh Bhatt directed the 1993 Indian Hindi-language action criminal drama movie Gumrah which Sujit Sen and Robin Bhatt also co-wrote. Rahul Roy Anupam Kher Sanjay Dutt and Sridevi appear in it. An aspiring singer named Roshni (Sridevi) who is helped in the movie by Rahul Malhotra (Roy) develops her profession and they end up falling in love. However he deserts her as they are traveling to Hong Kong and the authorities later detain her for allegedly trafficking cocaine.

Sridevi’s performance which is regarded as one of the best in her career and thus got her a nomination for Best Actress at the 39th Filmfare Awards gained significant praise from critics after the movie’s release. The movie was also a financial success making 58 million (US$730 000) globally against a budget of twenty million (US$250 000). being 1993’s seventh-highest-grossing movie.

Monsoon Wedding (2001)

PlayThe comedy-drama Monsoon Wedding was released in 2001 and was written and directed by Sabrina Dhawan. Naseeruddin Shah Lillete Dubey Shefali Shah and Vasundhara Das are the movie’s stars.

The plot centres on love relationships that develop at a Delhi-area Punjabi Hindu wedding. While attending the MFA cinema program at Columbia University Dhawan created the first draft of the script in just one week. The movie which is entirely set in New Delhi was a collaboration between businesses in India the US Italy France and Germany.

Monsoon Wedding had its world premiere at the Marché du Film section of the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. It later won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and made over $30 million at the box office abroad. In April 2014 a Broadway production of a musical based on the movie debuted. The best romance of the twenty-first century according to IndieWire in 2017.

Patiala House (2011)

In the 2011 Hindi-language sports drama film Patiala House Rishi Kapoor Dimple Kapadia Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma play the main characters. The film is directed by Nikkhil Advani. Under the auspices of People Tree Films Credence Motion Pictures and Hari Om Entertainment it was produced by Bhushan Kumar Mukesh Talreja Krishan Kumar and Twinkle Khanna. 

The movie premiered on February 11, 2011. On December 24 2010 the movie’s theatrical trailer debuted alongside Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan. A quick bowler Akshay’s character is loosely inspired by Monty Panesar. Rahul Nanda the son of writer Gulshan Nanda is a PR designer who came up with the concept for the movie.

Raazi (2018)

PlayMeghna Gulzar is the director of the 2018 spy action thriller movie Raazi which was also produced by Vineet Jain Karan Johar Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta under the brands of Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions. Vicky Kaushal Rajit Kapur Shishir Sharma and Jaideep Ahlawat play supporting roles in addition to Alia Bhatt who plays the lead. 

An Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who at her father’s request marries a family of military commanders in Pakistan to convey information to India preparatory to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 is the subject of the film which is based on Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel Calling Sehmat. 

Raazi’s main shooting started in July 2017 in Mumbai and ended on October 27 2017. Patiala Nabha Malerkotla and Doodhpathri were among the locales used for filming. On May 11 2018 Raazi came out. Raazi which had a 350 million rupee ($4.4 million) budget ended up having a worldwide box office take of 1.96 billion rupees ($25 million) making it one of the highest-grossing Indian movies with a female lead. 

Additionally, it received positive reviews from critics who praised Meghna’s directing and Bhatt’s acting. At the 64th Filmfare Awards Raazi tied with Andhadhun for first place with 5 wins including Best Film Best Director (Gulzar) and Best Actress. Raazi garnered 15 nominations (Bhatt).

Sardar Ka Grandson (2021)

Anuja Chauhan and Kaashvi Nair co-wrote the script for Sardar Ka Grandson an Indian comedy-drama movie to be released in 2021.

Bhushan Kumar Divya Khosla Kumar Krishan Kumar Monisha Advani Madhu Bhojwani Nikkhil Advani and John Abraham worked together to produce the movie under the T-Series Emmay Entertainment and JA Entertainment labels. Leading parts in the movie are played by Arjun Kapoor Neena Gupta and Rakul Preet Singh. On May 18 2021 Netflix released the movie. 

Tanishk Bagchi wrote the soundtrack for the movie. In contrast, lyrics were written by Manoj Muntashir Happy Raikoti Millind Gaba and Tanishk Bagchi.

The song Jee Ni Karda is a replica of Manak-2008 E’s song “Dhoor.” The song Main Teri Ho Gayi is a remake of the 2017 single by Punjabi singer Millind Gaba of the same name.

Love Ka Hai Intezaar (2017)

Siddharth P. Malhotra is the creator of the romantic drama television series Love Ka Hai Intezaar which is broadcast in Hindi. Every day from Monday through Saturday during the Star Dopahar afternoon programming block on Star Plus it was broadcast internationally.

Keith Sequeira Sara Arfeen Khan and Sanjeeda Sheikh. Preetika Rao and Mohit Sehgal joined the cast after the show’s twenty-year hiatus. The Star Dopahar block was canceled on September 30 2017 which brought the series to a conclusion.

Out of Love (2019)

Out of Love is an Indian series based on Doctor Foster by Mike Bartlett adapted by Hotstar for its label Hotstar Specials. The major actors are Rasika Dugal and Purab Kohli and it is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and Aijaz Khan. On November 22 2019 it made its Hotstar debut. The show received a second season’s worth of airtime the first two of which premiered on April 30 2021 and the last on May 21 2021.

Meera and Akarsh have been happily married until one day Meera finds a hair on Akarsh’s scarf. Meera has an obsession with discovering Akarsh’s mistress.

Finally, she confides in a friend who advises her to act normally around Akarsh while still looking for proof. The program follows Meera as she navigates her marriage and learns Akarsh is lying and has an affair with Alia a considerably younger lady.
