Mandhana is a member of a Marwari family and was born on July 18, 1996 in Mumbai to parents Smita and Shrinivas Mandhana. When she was two years old, her family moved to Madhavnagar Sangli in Maharashtra where she started her education. Her elder brother Shravan and her father were both district-level Sangli cricketers. She started playing cricket after seeing her brother playing in the Maharashtra Under-16 tournament. At the age of nine, she was selected for the Maharashtra Under-15 team. At the age of eleven, she was selected for the Maharashtra Under-19 team.

Mandhana’s family actively supported her in cricket and played an important role in helping her reach this level. Smriti Mandhana’s mother Smita took care of her food, clothing and other organizational matters, while Smriti Mandhana’s father Shrinivas, a chemical dealer, managed her cricket program. Her brother Shravan continued to bowl to her in the nets.

Smriti Mandhana's career

She took the first step forward when she became the first Indian woman to score a double hundred in a one-day match in October 2013. She scored an unbeaten 224 off just 150 balls for Maharashtra against Gujarat in the Western Zone Under-19 Championship at the Alembic Cricket Stadium in Vadodara. She has been selected as India's vice-captain for the 2022 Commonwealth Games cricket tournament to be held in Birmingham, England in July 2022.

She was picked by Southern Warriors in the 2021 draft to play in the Centurions' first season. She played 7 games for them, scoring 167 runs, before leaving them for the India tour of Australia.

In September 2021, she was added to the Sydney Thunder in preparation for the 2021-22 Women's Major League season. She tied the match record for the highest score in a season with a total of 100. In February 2022, she was hired by the Southern Warriors for the 2022 Hundred Season.

In August 2014, Mandanna made her Test debut against England at Walmsley Park. She contributed to the team's victory by scoring 22 and 51 in the first and second innings respectively. In the later innings, she chased 182 and also partnered with Tirush Kamini to score 76 in the first innings.

During the second One-Day International of India's 2016 tour of Australia at Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Tasmania, Mandana scored her first international hundred (102 off 109 balls) despite the team's defeat. Only Mandana represented India in the 2016 ICC Women's Team of the Year.

Mandana joined the 2017 World Cup squad after overcoming a ruptured ACL she suffered while playing in a WBBL match in January 2017. She missed the South Africa quad series and the World Cup qualifiers during her five-month recuperation period. She opened the World Cup campaign with a 90 in the first group match against England in Derby. She contributed to the team's 35-run win and was named Player of the Match. She then scored 106 in a one-day international against the West Indies, her second hundred. Mandana was a member of the Indian team that reached the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup final, but lost to England by nine runs.

In February 2019, Smriti Mandhana scored the fastest fifty in a Women's T20 International for India in just 24 balls. She also scored a fifty for India in a Women's Twenty20 International (WT20I) in March 2018. In the 2017-18 Women's Tri-Nation Series between India and Australia, she took 30 balls to reach that mark. She won the Player of the Series award for the three WODI matches in England the following month. She scored her first hundred in the 2018 Women's Premier League on 3 August 2018.

In October 2018, she was selected in the Indian squad for the Women's World Twenty20 tournament. She was considered a star of the team participating in the tournament. She captained the women's team against England in the first T20I match in Guwahati and created history by becoming the youngest T20I captain of India. The opening batsman of the Indian women's cricket team, aged 22 years and 229 days, replaced Harmanpreet Kaur who was unable to play in the three-match series due to an ankle injury.

She was named International Women's Cricketer of the Year at the CEAT International Cricket Awards in May 2019. She achieved this milestone in her 51st innings, making her the third fastest cricketer to reach 2,000 runs in an innings in WODIs during the West Indies series in November 2019.

She created history in Australia by becoming the first Indian female cricketer to score a century in both ODIs and Test matches.
