Childhood and Early Life

Shraddha Kapoor was born and brought up in Mumbai. She is of Punjabi heritage from her father’s side and has Marathi and Konkani roots on her mother’s side. Kapoor’s maternal grandfather, Pandharinath Kolhapure, came from Kolhapur. Meanwhile, her maternal grandmother was originally from Panaji, Goa. Shraddha Kapoor was raised in a culturally rich environment, surrounded by her maternal relatives from Maharashtra. During her childhood, she confessed to going through a tomboy phase, often engaging in playful scuffles with boys.

Shraddha Kapoor hails from a prominent acting lineage, including her father Shakti Kapoor, mother Shivangi Kapoor, elder brother Siddhanth Kapoor, and her aunts Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini Kolhapure. The actress is also the grand-niece of celebrated singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Shraddha Kapoor did her schooling at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai. Shraddha Kapoor was there till the age of 15 after which she decided to shift to the American School of Bombay in Mumbai. Shraddha Kapoor was very active in extra-curricular activities during her school days and would often take part in dance competitions. 2010–2016

Shraddha Kapoor’s foray into acting started with the 2010 thriller ‘Teen Patti’. Despite the movie receiving lackluster reviews, Kapoor’s debut performance was appreciated. Kapoor earned a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Female Debut for her role as a college girl.

Following ‘Teen Patti’, Kapoor signed a three-film deal with Yash Raj Films, and her first project with them was the teen comedy ‘Luv Ka The End’ in 2011. She played the role of a student who plots revenge against her cheating boyfriend. Despite the film’s underperformance, Kapoor’s performance received acclaim and won her the Stardust Searchlight Award for Best Actress.

In a surprising move, Kapoor opted out of the three-film contract with Yash Raj Films to sign ‘Aashiqui 2’, produced by Vishesh Films. The move proved to be advantageous as ‘Aashiqui 2’ in 2013 became her breakout film. She played Aarohi Keshav Shirke, a small-town bar singer who becomes a successful artist with the help of a popular singer. 2017 saw Kapoor starting her year with Shaad Ali’s romantic comedy ‘Ok Jaanu’, where she reunited with Aditya Roy Kapur on the silver screen. This film, a remake of the Tamil movie ‘O Kadhal Kanmani’ (2015) by Mani Ratnam, was produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Kapoor then co-starred in ‘Half Girlfriend’ with Arjun Kapoor, a film based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat. However, the film, as well as Kapoor’s performance, received negative feedback from critics, with Raja Sen from NDTV referring to it as superficial and uninspiring. Kapoor also took a significant role in ‘Haseena Parkar’, a biographical film by Apoorva Lakhia, in which she enacted the gangster and sister of Dawood Ibrahim. Her efforts, however, were not well received, with Anna M.M. Vetticad from Firstpost criticized Kapoor’s work as lacking intensity to match the rigour of the screenplay. Overall, Kapoor’s film releases in 2017 did not fare well commercially.

2018–Present

Kapoor then teamed up with Rajkummar Rao for the comedy-horror movie ‘Stree’ (2018). The film was based on the folklore of Nale Ba and showcased her as a mysterious, unnamed woman who falls for Rao’s character. Saibal Chatterjee, a critic, appreciated the film’s feminist undertones and found Kapoor’s portrayal as the cryptic woman fittingly frosty. Rajeev Masand noted her seamless blend into the character of an enticing outsider wrapped in a shroud of enigma. ‘Stree’ grossed over ₹1.7 billion (US$21 million), marking her highest earnings till date. That year, she also co-starred with Shahid Kapoor in ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’, which tackled electricity issues in India’s rural regions. She was drawn towards the script due to the underlying social message it conveyed.

Kapoor was expected to lead in a biopic portraying badminton athlete Saina Nehwal’s life, directed by Amole Gupte. However, after a few days of shooting, she exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. In 2019, Kapoor starred with Prabhas in the action-packed film ‘Saaho’, directed by Sujeeth. With a budget of ₹3.5 billion (US$44 million), it ranked among India’s most lavishly produced films. Kapoor filmed her parts in both Hindi and Telugu versions. Although the movie was not well-received, the Hindi version turned out to be a financial success. Her subsequent leading role was in Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Chhichhore,’ a film about college life, which also starred Sushant Singh Rajput. Despite the limited scope of her character, Kapoor managed to deliver a likable performance.

As the new decade rolled in, Kapoor reunited with Varun Dhawan for the dance film ‘Street Dancer 3D’ (2020), which did not fare well at the box office. She then joined hands with Shroff for ‘Baaghi 3’, which also suffered at the box office due to the closure of theatres amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following a three-year break that Kapoor expressed as forced due to the pandemic, she returned to the big screen opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Luv Ranjan’s romantic comedy ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ (2023). Kapoor’s styling and performance received positive comments, even though her emotionally intense scenes were considered slightly overacted. The film saw moderate success commercially. ‘Teen Patti’, a thrilling drama, is a 2010 Indian film in Hindi directed by Leena Yadav. The star cast includes Amitabh Bachchan, Ben Kingsley, R. Madhavan, Raima Sen, along with newcomer Shraddha Kapoor. Released under the banners of Hinduja Ventures and Serendipity Films, the film was produced by Ambika Hinduja. The plot spins around a mathematics professor, portrayed by Bachchan, who attempts to write a thesis on probability and ties it to the popular Indian card game, Teen Patti. The film was produced on a budget of ₹18 crore and grossed ₹7.63 crore at the box office.

Shraddha Kapoor’s career kick-started with the release of ‘Aashiqui 2’ a 2013 romantic musical drama film directed by Mohit Suri and financed by Mukesh Bhatt Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the Vishesh Films and T-Series Films banners. It is the spiritual successor of the movie  Aashiqui a musical film released in the year 1990. Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor play the lead characters in this Hindi version of the 1937 English classic A Star Is Born. Shaad Randhawa and Mahesh Thakur play supporting roles.

Aashiqui 2 is a drama that is set in the early 2010s and centred on a love story between failing artist Rahul Jaykar and his protégé rising singer Aarohi Keshav Shirke. This connection is complicated by Rahul’s alcoholism and temperamental difficulties. The Indian media first expressed a number of worries that it would fall short of the original’s high standards and popularity but it proved everyone wrong by becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of 2013 earning close to INR 109 crores in the process.

Ek Villain (2014)

‘Aashiqui 2’ tells the story of Rahul Jayakar (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aarohi Shirke (Shraddha Kapoor). Rahul is a celebrated singer, however, despite success and acclaim, he succumbs to alcohol addiction. His self-destructive path leads to professional downfall as producers refuse to work with him. Ignoring all advice to change his ways, Rahul remains entrapped in his addiction. One day, he hears Aarohi singing his song in a bar, which spurs an instant attraction. He vows to make Aarohi a renowned singer. Following meticulous efforts by Rahul, Aarohi hits the peak of success as a singer. Meanwhile, Rahul continues to drown in his alcoholism, ignoring his career, thus taking the story forward.

The first-day gross of ‘Aashiqui 2’ amounted to approximately ₹52.5 million (US$960,000). The film grossed ₹179.2 million (US$2.62 million), over the weekend, followed by a one-week gross of ₹346.5 million (US$5.06 million). The earnings dipped slightly in the second week due to the performance of competing movies, resulting in a collection of ₹17.35 crore (US$2.53 million). This brought the two-week total to ₹470 million (US$6.86 million). Despite that, the film maintained steady revenues and in the third week amounted to ₹165 million (US$2.41 million). The three-week total reached ₹635 million (US$9.27 million), marking the highest third-week gross of any film in 2013 thus far.

Haider (2014)

‘Haider’, a 2014 Indian crime thriller in Hindi, was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and co-produced by Bhardwaj and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The film, written by Bhardwaj and Basharat Peer, features Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Shraddha Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan.

The film is set against the backdrop of the 1995 Kashmir conflicts and is a modern interpretation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy ‘Hamlet’. ‘Haider’ also draws inspiration from Basharat Peer’s memoir ‘Curfewed Night’. The narrative follows Haider, a poet and student, who returns to conflict-ridden Kashmir to probe into his father’s mysterious disappearance. Soon, he finds himself entangled in the state’s fraught politics. ‘Haider’ is the concluding film of Bhardwaj’s trilogy inspired by Shakespearean works, following ‘Maqbool’ (2003) and ‘Omkara’ (2006).

ABCD 2 (2015)

In the dance movie ABCD: Any Body Can Dance sequel ABCD 2 which was released in 2015 Kapoor played a hip-hop dancer who participated in an international competition with her childhood buddy Suresh Mukund (essayed by Varun Dhawan). She studied several dance forms with choreographers Prabhudeva and Remo D’Souza in order to get ready for her role. The movie which was made by Walt Disney Pictures brought in 1.57 billion yen ($20 million) globally making it her most well-known work to that moment.

‘ABCD 2′ was launched by UTV Motion Pictures on 19 June 2015, in 3D format. The movie stands as one of Disney’s two authentic musical productions specifically tailored for the Indian audience. The soundtrack and background scores were composed by Sachin-Jigar, with Mayur Puri crafting the dialogues and lyrics. An interesting feature of the film is the decommissioned warship INS Vikrant, which provides a compelling backdrop for the dancers’ rehearsal space in the first half of the movie. The screenplay was penned by D’Souza and Tushar Hiranandani.

The film received a mix of positive and critical reviews. While elements such as the production design, choreography, music, and performances by Deva, Dhawan, and Kapoor garnered appreciation, the screenplay and the length of the movie faced criticism.

Baaghi (2016)

The 2016 Indian action thriller film ‘Baaghi’ was directed by Sabbir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The film is a reimagining of the 2004 Telugu film ‘Varsham’, and features Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor in leading roles. Sudheer Babu debuted in Hindi cinema with this film, and Sunil Grover played a notable supporting part. The film’s climax was inspired by the 2011 Indonesian thriller, ‘The Raid: Redemption’.

‘Critic reviews for ‘Baaghi’ were mixed, with praise directed towards the production design and action sequences, but critique towards the storyline’s lack of originality. Despite the mixed reviews, the film achieved blockbuster status, raking in approximately INR 127 crores on a budget of 37 crores. ‘Baaghi’ marked the beginning of the ‘Baaghi’ franchise, with its sequel releasing in 2018 and the third installment released in 2020.

Half Girlfriend (2017)

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name Half Girlfriend is a romantic drama film in the Hindi language. Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor play the main roles in the Mohit Suri-directed movie. Vikrant Massey and Rhea Chakraborty both play significant roles in the movie. It is a movie about two college students Riya and Madhav who cross paths with each other and form a bond of a lifetime. Madhav is a youngster from Bihar who can hardly speak English and falls in love with Riya. Riya is an affluent girl from Delhi who aspires to become a singer and moves to New York after her studies. In college Madhav asks Riya to be his girlfriend but she does not accept the proposal and counters it by agreeing to be his ‘Half Girlfriend’. What follows makes up the crux of the story.

Even though critics bashed the film for being very predictable and having a weak plotline Half Girlfriend was a commercial success worldwide with it earning close to INR 98 crores at the box office against a budget of INR 35 crores.

Stree (2018)

‘Stree’, a Hindi term for ‘Woman’, is a comedy horror film in Hindi released in 2018. Directed by Amar Kaushik in his debut, the movie was produced by Dinesh Vijan and Raj & D.K. Star performers included Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee. The storyline is a creative adaptation of the urban myth ‘Nale Ba’ (‘Come tomorrow’) from Karnataka, adjusted as ‘O Stree, Kal Aana’ (‘Oh woman, come tomorrow’) in the film.

Rao was approached by Raj and DK for their debut production in late November 2017. To prepare for his role as a tailor, Rao picked up sewing. By December, Shraddha Kapoor was confirmed as the lead actress. Raj and DK entrusted the direction to their first assistant director from ‘Go Goa Gone’, Amar Kaushik, in January 2018. The movie started shooting on 13 January 2018 in Chanderi, and further filmed in Bhopal and Mumbai, wrapping up by May 2018. The music was provided by Sachin-Jigar, while Vayu, Badshah, and Jigar Saraiya penned the lyrics.

‘Stree’ was theatrically released on 31 August 2018 and was met with substantial critical acclaim. Having grossed over ₹180.76 crores against a budget of ₹14 crores, the film was a significant commercial and critical hit. It secured ten nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. Amar Kaushik took home the Best Debut Director award. ‘Stree’ is the initial installment of Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe, followed by ‘Roohi’ in 2021, and ‘Bhediya’ in 2022.

A sequel, ‘Stree 2’, is now underway and is set to release on 31 August 2024, marking six years since the original.

Sahoo (2019)

‘Saaho’, translated as ‘May Victory be Yours’, is an action thriller from India that was released in 2019. The film, both written and directed by Sujeeth, was produced under the banner of UV Creations. Filmed concurrently in both Telugu and Hindi, ‘Saaho’ boasts of a star-studded cast featuring Prabhas in the lead role, and a concerning ensemble of Shraddha Kapoor, Chunky Pandey, Jackie Shroff, Arun Vijay, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Lal, Murali Sharma, Mandira Bedi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prakash Belawadi, Tinnu Anand, Evelyn Sharma, Supreeth, Devan, and Vennela Kishore. ‘Saaho’ made history as Prabhas’s first-ever Hindi film and Shraddha Kapoor’s inauguration into Telugu cinema.

The storyline orbits around two undercover agents on the trail of a thief who pocketed a staggering ₹2,000 crore (US$20 billion). As they delve deeper, they discover the case is intertwined with the untimely death of an influential business magnate and an ensuing gang conflict to control a sprawling city.

Chhichhore (2019)

Nitesh Tiwari and Sajid Nadiadwala’s 2019 coming-of-age comedy-drama film Chhichhore is the winner of a National Award and was produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. Sushant Singh Rajput Shraddha Kapoor Varun Sharma Tahir Raj Bhasin Naveen Polishetty Tushar Pandey and Saharsh Kumar Shukla play the key characters in the movie which is based on Tiwari’s experiences as an IIT-B student.

Chhichhore was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2019 and the last theatrical release of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. It went on to earn INR 215 crores at the box office and was also the recipient of the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi along with the Best Film Award at the Filmfare Awards. 

Chhichhore is a parallel drama that takes place in the 1990s and 2019 and chronicles the tale of Aniruddh “Anni” Pathak a middle-aged divorcee whose son Raghav attempts suicide after failing an admission exam and despite surviving seems unwilling to live. In a group of six friends Anni desperately tries to persuade Raghav to believe his own story against the wishes of Maya his ex-girlfriend who is now his ex-wife. As he continues the other five learn of the tragedy and decide to share their friend’s pain and finish the story which they value as their greatest life lesson.

Tu Jhooti Main Makkar (2023)

‘’Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’, also known as ‘TJMM’, is a 2023 romantic comedy in Hindi, directed by Luv Ranjan and penned by Rahul Mody and Ranjan. Facilitated by Luv Films and T-Series Films, the cast is graced with the return of Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor after a three-year break. They star alongside Dimple Kapadia and Anubhav Singh Bassi. Boney Kapoor makes a debut as an actor in the film, while supporting roles are played by Monica Chaudhary, Inayat Verma, Hasleen Kaur, Jatinder Kaur, Amber Rana, Rajesh Jais, and Ayesha Raza Mishra.

‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ was released in theaters on 8 March 2023, aptly coinciding with the weekend of the festival of Holi. While the film attracted mixed reviews from critics, it managed to accrue a global financial turnover of over ₹220.10 crores. This accomplishment classifies it as the sixth highest-earning Hindi film of 2023 and the tenth highest-earning Indian film for the same year.

Shraddha Kapoor set to portray valiant Rukhsana Kausar in a forthcoming movie. Rukhsana Kausar became renowned in 2009, when, hailing from the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, she notably killed a LeT militant, Abu Osama, using an axe, and managed to make his confederates take flight by opening gunfire at them. Shraddha Kapoor has been chosen to portray Rukhsana Kausar in an upcoming film. To recap, Rukhsana Kaur is a braveheart from Kashmir who fearlessly put an end to a member of a terrorist group.

Stree 2 (2024)

Stree 2, the eagerly anticipated sequel to hit horror-comedy Stree (2018), promises to delve further into the unexplained lore, with Shraddha Kapoor reprising her role. Shraddha’s performance in the first part was met with critical acclaim, leaving audiences eager for more. Her return to the sequel offers the promise of unraveling the layers of her character. The film promises double the fun and spookiness as a new paranormal character called “Sarkata” is being introduced in the story.

Cast members Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee will be reprising their roles as well. The cast gets more exciting with Varun Dhawan and Tamannaah Bhatia in special appearences. Directed by Amar Kaushik under the banner of Maddock Films and Jio Studios, the film is all set to release theatrically on Indian independnce day, 15th August 2024.

• In 2014, during the success party for ‘Ek Villain’, photographers chose to boycott her due to her unfavorable conduct towards the press and media during the promotion of ‘Ek Villain’.
• In the aftermath of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in September 2020, she was linked to a narcotics case being investigated by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). She was called for questioning by the NCB, based on WhatsApp discussions obtained from Jaya Saha’s mobile phone, who previously served as Sushant Singh Rajput’s talent manager. Other celebrities, including Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, and Rakul Preet Singh, were also summoned by the NCB in relation to the same case.
