Dhawan started his career with the Delhi Under-16 team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 1999-2000. The following year, he top-scored in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. His performances in these two seasons paved the way for his entry into the ACC Under-17 Asia Cup in India. Dhawan was then selected for the Delhi Under-19 team for the Cooch Behar Trophy in October 2001 and again in October 2002 after averaging 85 in three matches in the Asia Cup. With his performances one after another, Dhawan became a star in domestic cricket at a very young age. He then played for the North Zone Under-19 team in the CK Nayudu Cup Cooch Behar Trophy and even captained the Delhi Under-19 team. At the 2004 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, Dhawan became the top scorer of the tournament with a total of 505 runs in seven innings.

In November 2004, Dhawan made his first-class debut for Delhi. Dhawan scored a total of 461 runs in 6 matches, finishing the Ranji season as Delhi's top scorer. In October 2005, Dhawan suffered his first poor performance in a long time while playing for India B in the 2005/06 Challenger Cup. Dhawan then played for the Northern Zones against the Zimbabwe Cricket Union President's XI and the Board's Chairman's XI against the visiting Sri Lanka in a three-day tournament.

He also played for India A in the Eur-Asia Cricket Series in April and May 2006. The 2006–07 Ranji season was particularly memorable for Dhawan as he was named captain of the Delhi team that played in the Ranji One-Day Cup in February 2007. Dhawan was part of the Delhi team that won the 2007–08 season. He performed well in the tournament until his career fell on hard times when India A toured England in 2010. In the limited-overs triangular series between England Lions India A and West Indies A, he made a sudden turnaround, scoring 166 runs from four innings at an average of 41.50 and a strike rate of 130.70. He was then selected for the Rest of India team to play against defending Ranji champions Mumbai in the Irani Cup in October 2010. With his impressive performance in the Irani Cup, he was selected as a member of the India Blue team for the Challenger Cup.

He represented Delhi in the Ranji Trophy in 2010-11. Dhawan struggled with periods of poor form in the Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Deodhar Trophy. Dhawan failed to join the Indian team for the tour of England as the Indian team continued its tournament in the West Indies. However, Dhawan made up for his mistakes with his domestic performances.

IPL Career

In 2008, Shikhar made his IPL debut for Delhi Dadeville. He was the third highest scorer for the team, scoring 4 half-centuries. In exchange for Ashish Nehra, the management chose to trade him to Mumbai Indians. He played in the next two seasons of IPL for Mumbai Indians. In the fourth season, Deccan Chargers bought Dhawan for $300,000.

Ahead of the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 tournament, Dhawan was named the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, Darren Sammy took over as the captain of the Indian Premier League in 2014. The 2015 Indian Premier League season was a complete disaster for Dhawan and Sunrisers. However, they recovered and won the tournament in 2016. Sunrisers Hyderabad decided to bring Dhawan in for the 2017 Indian Premier League. In the 2018 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Dhawan for Rs 5.2 crore using their RTM card. In the 2019 season, Dhawan was traded again to Delhi Capitals, where he currently plays.

International career

Apart from playing his 100th ODI match and hitting his 13th one-day century against South Africa, Dhawan also became the first Indian batsman to hit a century in his 100th ODI match. In the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, Dhawan started opening for the Indian team along with Rohit Sharma and the risk paid off handsomely. After Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, the second most successful opening combination for the Indian team is Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

On 4 June 2011, Dhawan played his first T20 International match against the West Indies in Port of Spain. He started the match and was bowled out after being hit for 5 off 11 balls. However, Dhawan has made great strides in T20 cricket. Dhawan led all cricketers in T20I runs scored in 2018. He ended the year with 689 runs and was selected in Cricbuzz's ODI and T20 Team of the Year.

Dhawan was selected in the Indian cricket team for the four-match series against Australia in February 2013. On 14 March, Dhawan replaced Sehwag in the third Test match in Mohali. On Dhawan's Test debut, he scored the fastest hundred in history. He achieved this in just 85 balls. In the end, Dhawan was bowled out for 187. Dhawan did not play in India's second innings after injuring his hand while fielding on the fourth day. The injury to his left hand was eventually confirmed to be a fracture, which ruled him out of the fourth Test match in Delhi and forced him to miss six weeks of action. On 14 June 2018, before lunch on the first day of the Test match against Afghanistan, Dhawan became the only Indian player to score a hundred before lunch and the sixth Indian batsman to score a hundred before lunch.
