Shardul Thakur is a fast batsman who hits hard and can flick the ball away from right-handers. He has emerged as the leader of Mumbai’s attack. In the new ball, Dhawal Kulkarni’s pace is stronger, which is in stark contrast to Thakur’s batting style. The duo worked well together to help Mumbai win its 41st Ranji Trophy in February 2016. In the championship match against Saurashtra, Thakur took eight wickets and on the third day he dismissed Chheteshwar Pujara with a ball that bounced off a length ball and hit the shoulder of the bat, which was probably the highlight of the match.
Hailing from the town of Palghar, 87 km north of Mumbai, Thakur spent his early years playing cricket, lugging his gear on early morning trains. In his first season in 2012-2013, Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy, but he did not achieve much, taking just four wickets in four matches at an average of 82.
On the advice of his Mumbai teammates, Thakur lost weight and returned the following year, leaner and fitter, taking 27 wickets at an average of 26.25. Even better, Thakur tied for first place in the Ranji Trophy bowling charts in 2014-15 with 48 wickets at an average of 20.81. As a result, he was subsequently selected for India A’s four-day matches against Australia A and South Africa A. Later that year, while playing for the Chairman’s XI against the visiting South Africa, he took four wickets, beating the likes of Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis.
