The movie is partially based on the actual account of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi also known as Gangubai Kothewali whose life was chronicled in S. Mr. Hussain Zaidi. 

Gangubai Kathiawadi had its world premiere at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival on February 16 2022 and went on a general release on February 25 2022. 

It tells the story of the rise of a simple girl from Kathiawad who had no choice but to accept the ways of destiny and turn them in her favor.Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the director and producer of the 2022 Hindi-language biographical crime drama movie Gangubai Kathiawadi.
