Biography of Sanju Samson

Indian cricketer Sanju Viswanath Samson is the captain of Kerala’s domestic team and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Sanju started playing cricket in Delhi and moved to Kerala as a teenager.

He made a splash in youth cricket before making his first-class debut for Kerala in 2011. He made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2013 and won the Rookie of the Year award. In the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he became the sixth Indian to hit a double century in List-A cricket by scoring an unbroken 212 runs.

On 3 November 2011, at the age of 17, Sanju Samson made his first-class debut for Kerala Ranji against Vidarbha. Samson’s breakthrough season came during the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy, when he really broke into the competitive ranks. North East Assam had a tough time scoring 323 runs in the first innings of the first match. However, Sanju Samson outclassed Assam with a career-high score of 211, giving Kerala a vital 39-run lead. In the Ranji Trophy, he scored his first double hundred, hitting 23 fours and 5 sixes.

He scored 377 runs in two matches at an average of 188.5, becoming the top scorer after the second round of the Ranji Trophy in 2013-14. He scored 530 runs in six matches (11 innings) at an average of 58.88, becoming the top scorer for Kerala.

In the 2019-20 season, Samson reached the pinnacle of his career in the domestic arena when he scored an unbeaten double hundred against Vijay Hazare against Goa. The Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman scored 212 runs off just 129 balls, setting a new record for the highest individual score by a wicketkeeper-batsman in Grade-A cricket. Previously, Abid Ali held the record with an unbeaten 208 runs in the Pakistan domestic one-day match in 2018, but was surpassed by Samson.

IPL Career

Sanju Samson was in the spotlight after a strong debut season in the Ranji Trophy, but was eventually dropped by the Kolkata Knight Riders. He then moved to Rajasthan Royals in 2013, but despite his talent finally reaching its peak, he was unable to play for the team.

Sanju has been a key part of the batting line-up of the Rajasthan Royals for three years. According to Rahul Dravid, who coached the Royals in the IPL-7 league, Samson is one of the current crop of players who will be successful for India in the near future. Hence, the Rajasthan Royals retained Sanju for the 2015 IPL season. The league champions, Rajasthan Royals, qualified for the knockout rounds, but Sanju Samson did not do the team any favours by scoring more than 50 runs just once in 15 matches.

However, when RR withdrew from the Indian Premier League, Samson was bought by Delhi Dadevilles in 2016. Samson did not disappoint his new team and became Delhi’s third highest scorer in 2017. On 11 April 2017, at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Sanju scored his first T20 hundred in the 2017 Indian Premier League against Rising Pune Supergiants. When Rajasthan rejoined the Indian Premier League in January 2018, the team immediately bought him at the Indian Premier League auction for Rs 8 crore. On 29 March 2019, Sanju Samson scored 102 runs in just 55 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, hitting 10 fours and 4 sixes.

International career

In 2014, Sanju was included in the 17-man squad for 5 ODIs and one T20 match against England, but he did not get a chance to make the starting eleven. Sanju Samson continued to score big and his consistent performances in the IPL and Ranji Trophy earned him a spot in the 2015 tour of Zimbabwe. He made his debut for the Indian team in a T20 match. He bowled 24 balls and scored only 19 runs, so the match did not go well for him and he has not played for the Indian team in cricket since then.

He was selected for the T20I series of India’s 2020 New Zealand tour and made the starting lineup as an opener. After spending 4 years in the wilderness, he finally found a place in the team, although he could not make the expected impact with the bat.
