Sandeep’s performances are known for their depth and authenticity, and he completely immerses himself in the roles he plays. While painting and freelancing for advertising agencies, Sandeep was also interested in acting until he met Pandit Satyadev Dubey and worked with him in rigorous plays and workshops, including a large-scale Hindi classical play, Andha Yug, in which he shared the stage with outstanding actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Amrish Puri, Akash Khurana and Mohan Bhandari. Deeply influenced and inspired by Dubeji’s teachings and simultaneously working with renowned theatre directors like Vijaya Mehta, Sunil Shanbagh and Chetan Dutta, Sandeep found himself well suited as an actor and theatre director.

After four years of acting in dramas in English, Marathi and Hindi, his television career began to take shape. On Zed TV, he played Salim, a young Muslim lawyer who falls in love with a local Muslim woman in 9 Malabar Hill, a journalist in DD Metro, a drug-dealing underworld boss Swabhiman in DD, and a consultant in DD Metro. In Shriram Raghavan’s much-talked-about one-hour suspense drama First Kill, he played a policeman who solved the mystery of an elderly couple who refused to accept the body of their son. Sandeep’s film career began with his debut in Mammo (1994), directed by the acclaimed Shyam Benegal and set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan partition in 1947. In the film, he played an immigration officer (Apte) who tried to help the immigrant protagonist Mammo.

In Sudhir Mishra’s Is Raat Ki Subaah Nahin (1996), he played a thug named Shankar who spends the entire plot hunting down the hero while wearing a new pair of shoes which bite the hero and eventually hurt him. His performance added dark humor to the film.

In Govind Nihalani’s Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998), he played a Naxalite who later becomes an activist despite the arrest and execution of his friends. In Nishikant Kamath’s acclaimed Dombivali Fast, Sandeep played an ordinary guy from the inner city (Dombivali) whose daily lifestyle is hectic, frustrating, unimproving and deteriorating, and who eventually starts to sort things out.

The film won the National Award and Sandeep won the state’s best Acotr Award, among other awards. From 2012, he set up his own production company and produced films like Premsutra in Marathi and Dombivli Returns in Hindi and Marathi (bilingual), which screened at many national and international film festivals and he was named the best actor at the 2020 Indian Critics’ Choice Awards. His Hotstar web series City of Dreams, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, has a huge global audience and its second season is set to premiere soon.

Shyam Benegal directed Mammo in 1994. The film starred Farida Jalal, Surekha Sikri, Amit Phalke and Rajit Kapur.

In 1995, the film won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film. Sandeep Kulkarni plays the lead role, and Shilpa Tulaskar and Sandesh Jadhav also star.

D-Day

D-Day is a 2013 action thriller film produced by DAR Motion Pictures and Emmay Entertainment, shot in Hindi. Nikhil Advani directed the film, which stars Rishi Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Arjun Rampal, Huma Qureshi, Sandeep Kulkarni and Shruti Haasan. The film was released on July 19, 2013, to mostly positive reviews.

Krutant is a Marathi psychological thriller film directed by Datta Mohan Bhandare and produced by Miiheer Shah, which was released in 2019. The film stars Sandeep Kulkarni, Suyog Gorhe and Sayli Patil in the lead roles. The film was released in theatres on January 18, 2019.
