Biography

Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli born 10 October 1973 is an Indian film director and screenwriter best known for his action fantasy and epic genre features. He is the highest-paid Indian filmmaker and the highest-grossing Indian director of all time. He has won a New York Film Critics Circle honor a Critics’ Choice Movie honor two Saturn Awards and three National Film Awards. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2016 for his contributions to the area of art.

Rajamouli has been labeled India’s most significant director today by different publications. He has produced twelve feature films to date all of which have been box office successes. Three of his films are among the top six highest-grossing pictures in India to date: Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) and RRR (2022). 

At the time of their release all three films were also the most expensive Indian films ever produced. Baahubali 2 is presently India’s highest grossing film with over 100 million tickets sold during its box office run; the highest estimated admissions for any film in India since Sholay. (1975).

Age

S.S Rajamouli was born on 10 October 1973 in Raichur Karnataka. He is currently 50 years old as of 2023. His zodiac sign is Libra.

Childhood

Rajamouli was obsessed with stories since he was in second grade. His grandmother exposed him to the epics Ramayana Mahabharata and Bhagavata when he was seven years old. His father introduced him to Amar Chitra Katha comics at the same age which contained stories about Indian historical characters religious legends and folktales. 

It had a significant effect on him and influenced his preference for larger-than-life characters. He would remember those stories and films and retell them to his friends in his own unique manner. His mother was enthusiastic about him acquiring English and would take him to see English-language films in nearby towns. She encouraged him to peruse comic books and storybooks in his spare time and never put any pressure on him academically. 

He was not an ambitious child his father recalls of Rajamouli’s childhood. We didn’t know what he was interested in for a long period. He expressed an interest in movies. In a film I directed he played the part of young Krishna.

Education

Rajamouli received his primary and secondary education in Kovvur before moving to Eluru to complete his intermediate first year. He then took a two-year hiatus before finishing his Intermediate second year in Kovvur. He did not continue his formal schooling after that.

Family

Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli was born in Kovvur Andhra Pradesh to V. Vijayendra Prasad and Raja Nandini. At the time of his birth his parents were living in Amareshwara Camp near Manvi in the Raichur region of Karnataka state. They are devout followers of Lord Shiva. Rajamouli was conceived as a result of a dream his mother had while visiting the pilgrimage site of Srisailam. As a result he was given the moniker Srisaila Sri Rajamouli. He only has one sibling. 

His father is from Kovvur which is close to Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh. Rajamouli’s mother is from Vizag Andhra Pradesh and he spent several years there. Rajamouli grew up in a joint household with his father and five brothers sharing a house with their respective families. Prasad’s family owned property in Kovvur that was lost when railway lines were built through it. 

In 1968 Prasad and his family relocated from Kovvur to Karnataka. He purchased seven acres of paddy fields in Hirekotikal village Manvi Taluk Raichur district with his older brother K. V. Sivashankar. In 1977 their family returned to Kovvur.

Wife

In 2001 Rajamouli wedded Rama the sister-in-law of his cousin Keeravani. Rama served as a costume designer for many of Rajamouli’s films after their marriage. Karthikeya Rama’s son from her prior marriage was adopted by him. Mayookha the couple’s adopted daughter is also a member of the family. Karthikeya has a wife named Pooja Prasad who is the daughter of Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu.

Struggle

Rajamouli’s grandpa was a wealthy landowner with 360 acres. They had lost much of their fortune by the time Rajamouli was 10 or 11 years old. Because his father Vijayendra Prasad and uncle Siva Shakthi Datta were film enthusiasts they sold most of their remaining assets and relocated to Madras (now Chennai) to produce movies. 

Many films were begun but never completed. They suffered financial setbacks and began working as ghostwriters to make ends meet. In Madras thirteen people of his extended family moved into a two-room flat. Rajamouli recalls his family laughing at themselves and their situation at the time but they were never unhappy about it.

RRR is a 2022 Telugu-language epic action drama film produced by S. S. Rajamouli who also co-wrote the screenplay with V. Vijayendra Prasad. D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainment directed it. N. T. Rama Rao Jr. Ram Charan Ajay Devgn Alia Bhatt Shriya Saran Samuthirakani Ray Stevenson Alison Doody and Olivia Morris appear in the film. It revolves around two fictional Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao) their relationship and their struggle against the British Raj.

Rajamouli came across tales about Rama Raju and Bheem’s lives and connected the coincidences imagining what would have happened if they had met and become friends. 

RRR had the biggest opening-day gross of 240 crore (US$30 million) in India. It became the highest-grossing picture in its home state of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana grossing over 415 crore (US$52 million). The film grossed 1 200 crore (US$150 million) – 1 258 crore (US$160 million) worldwide breaking several box office marks for an Indian film including the third highest-grossing Indian film and the second highest-grossing Telugu film.

The song Naatu Naatu received Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards becoming the first song from an Indian film and the first from an Asian film to do so. The film was the third Indian film and the first Telugu film to earn Golden Globe nominations including Best Foreign Language Film and won Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu making it the first Indian (and Asian) nomination to win the award. At the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards RRR also received Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song.

Baahubali: The Beginning

S. S. Rajamouli co-wrote and directed Baahubali: The Beginning which was produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under Arka Media Works. The film was made in Tollywood India’s center for Telugu language films and was shot in both Telugu and Tamil concurrently. Prabhas co-stars with Rana Daggubati Anushka Shetty Tamannaah Ramya Krishna Sathyaraj and Nassar. The film follows Sivudu an adventurous young man who assists his love Avantika in rescuing Devasena the former queen of Mahishmati who is now a prisoner under the tyrannical reign of King Bhallaladeva. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion brings the tale to a close.

With a global box office gross of 680 crore ($122 million) it became the highest-grossing South Indian film and the second-highest-grossing Indian picture in history. It is presently the world’s eleventh highest-grossing Indian film. It’s Hindi dubbed version also set several milestones including being the highest-grossing dubbed film in Hindi history. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion India’s highest grossing film of all time has since broken both budget and box office marks.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

S. S. Rajamouli directed the 2017 Indian epic action picture Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which he co-wrote with V. Vijayendra Prasad. Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni created it under the banner Arka Media Works. The film was made in Tollywood India’s center for Telugu language films and was shot in both Telugu and Tamil concurrently.

Prabhas Rana Daggubati Anushka Shetty Tamannaah Ramya Krishna Sathyaraj Nassar and Subbaraju star in it. It is the second film in the Baahubali series and serves as both a sequel and a prequel to Baahubali: The Beginning. The film is set in medieval India and depicts Amarendra Baahubali and Bhallaladeva’s sibling rivalry; the latter conspires against the former.

With a global gross of 1 810 crore ($280.7 million) the film temporarily surpassed PK (2014) to become the highest grossing Indian film of all time collecting roughly 789 crore in just six days. It became the first Indian film to earn more than 1 000 crore in ten days. It broke numerous box office marks in India becoming the highest-grossing film in Hindi as well as Telugu and Tamil. It is the highest-grossing Indian film and the second-highest-grossing Indian film in the globe. During its box office run the film sold over 10 crore (100 million) tickets the highest projected admissions for any film in India since Sholay. (1975).

Magadheera

Magadheera is a 2009 Telugu fantasy action film directed by S. S. Rajamouli and produced by Allu Aravind’s Geetha Arts based on a tale by V. Vijayendra Prasad. Ram Charan Srihari Kajal Aggarwal and Dev Gill appear in the film. It’s about reincarnation and everlasting love.

Magadheera was published on July 31 2009 to critical and commercial acclaim. At the conclusion of its theatrical run it had a distributor’s share of 73.6 crore and gross collections of 150 crores. At the moment it was the highest-grossing Telugu film in history. With a theatrical run of 1000 days it beat Chandramukhi (2005) as the longest-running South Indian film. At the 57th National Picture Awards the picture received the National Award for Best Choreography and Best Special Effects as well as six Filmfare Awards and nine state Nandi Awards. The success of the picture catapulted the main actors to stardom.

Vikramarkudu

Vikramarkudu is a 2006 Telugu action film produced by S. S. Rajamouli who also co-wrote the script with V. Vijayendra Prasad. Ravi Teja and Anushka Shetty appear in the film. It follows a thief who finds a girl who insists he is her father while a series of events connects his life to that of her real father who is his look-alike. M. M. Keeravani composed the film’s soundtrack and Sarvesh Murari and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao shot and edited the film.

Vikramarkudu was a commercial success with distributors receiving a share of 23 crore (US$5.1 million). The film was shown in the mainstream part of the International Film Festival of India.

Upcoming films

Rajamouli is eager to work with thespian Mahesh Babu. The film described as a jungle adventure set in Africa is scheduled to begin production in 2023. He revealed more details about the film while attending the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. My next project with Mahesh Babu will be a global action adventure. It’ll be like a James Bond or Indiana Jones film with Indian roots. He signed with the American talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in September 2022 in what has been characterised as a coup for the agency. There were also rumours that he was working on a live-action animated picture with Indian themes. He revealed in August 2022 that he was working on a pair of scripts that could be turned into animated films. Rajamouli has frequently stated his desire to direct a film based on the Indian classic Mahabharata in the future. He believes it will be a four-part undertaking that will take six to ten years to complete.

With films that have grossed over Rs 1000 crore at the box office Rajamouli not only delivers magnum opus cinema but also asks a premium for it. According to the Hindustan Times the director was paid Rs 25 crores for the Baahubali franchise. According to News18 he owns 30% of the profit from his newest film RRR. His net worth is estimated to be $15 Million USD (approx Rs 110 Crore).
