He served as vice-captain when the Indian U-19 team finished second in the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

He made his debut for India in a T20 International (T20I) in January 2017, made his Test debut in August 2018, and made his One-Day International (ODI) debut in October 2018. In January 2019, Pant was named Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year at the 2018 ICC Awards. In February 2021, Pant was named Men’s Player of the Month at the inaugural ICC Player of the Month awards.

Pant was chosen as the Indian captain for the tournament in June 2022 after original captain KL Rahul missed the T20I series against South Africa due to injury.

family

Rishabh Pant was born on October 4, 1997, to Rajendra and Saroj Pant in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. When Pant was 12, his mother would take him to Delhi on weekends for him to train with renowned coach Tarak Sinha at the Sonnet Cricket Academy. They had no place to stay in the city, so he and his mother lived in the Sikh Gurdwara in Moti Bagh. Despite a few struggles, under Sinha’s guidance, Pant progressed through the Under-19 competition and earned recognition in the cricketing world.

Profession

The first stage

In the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Pant made his Grade 1 debut in a Ranji Trophy match on 22 October 2015 and made his Grade A debut a month later.

In the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy against Maharashtra, Pant scored 308 runs in one innings, becoming the third-youngest Indian player to score three centuries in first-class cricket.

On November 8, 2016, in Delhi’s match against Jharkhand, Pant scored the fastest hundred in the history of the Ranji Trophy in just 48 balls.

In February 2017, Pant was chosen as Delhi’s captain for the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He replaced Gautam Gambhir, who had led Delhi to the final of the previous season. Delhi coach Bhaskar Pillai said it was a “consensus decision” to prepare Pant for the future.

Pant scored the second fastest hundred against Delhi in the Divisional T20 League 2017-18 on 14 January 2018. Pant scored the hundred in 32 balls.

IPL Career

On the same day that he led the Indian U-19 team to victory with a hundred runs at the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Pant was acquired by the Delhi Daredevils for the 2016 Indian Premier League. In the third match of the season, Pant scored 69 runs off 40 balls as the Delhi Daredevils beat the Gujarat Lions by eight wickets. In the 2017 season against the same opponents, he scored 97 runs off 43 balls.

During the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL), Pant scored an unbeaten knock of 128 runs off 63 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, setting a record for the highest individual score by an Indian cricketer in the history of the IPL.

Moreover, he became the second youngest player to score a hundred in the history of IPL. His 128 runs is the second-highest percentage scored by an individual batsman in an IPL match and accounts for 68.4% of the team’s total runs. Pant was named the captain of Delhi Capitals for that season in March 2021 after regular captain Shreyas Iyer missed the entire 2021 Indian Premier League due to injury. He was also retained as the captain for the 2022 Indian Premier League.

Going international

In January 2017, Pant was selected in the Indian T20 International (T20I) squad for the series against England. He made his debut for India in the third T20 International against England at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 1 February 2017. At the age of 19 years and 120 days, Pant became the youngest player to play in a T20 International for India.

In February of the same year, he was selected in the Indian T20I squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. In July 2018, Pant was selected in the Indian Test squad for the series against England. On 18 August 2018, he faced England for the first time in a Test match. After hitting a six early in the series, he became the first Indian batsman to reach that milestone in a Test match. In addition to becoming the second-youngest wicketkeeper in history and the first Indian wicketkeeper to record a Test century in England, Pant also scored his first century against England on 11 September 2018. He was selected in the Indian One-Day International (ODI) squad for the series against West Indies the following month. 2018

In December 2018, in the first Test match against Australia, Pant took 11 catches, becoming the wicketkeeper with the most catches in an Indian Test match. In January 2019, in the fourth Test match against Australia, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to take a hundred catches in an Australian Test match.

In June 2019, Pant was included in India’s Cricket World Cup squad to replace Shikhar Dhawan, who broke his left thumb during the match against Australia. After the World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named Pant as the team’s rising star.

The 2019-20 season was crucial for Pant, given that MS Dhoni had said he would temporarily retire from international cricket. With Pant among the top runners, the Indian team began looking for a new wicketkeeper this season. However, Pant fell further down the pecking order due to the southpaw’s mediocre performance and KL Rahul’s emergence as a replacement at the wicketkeeper position.

It didn’t help that the 2020 IPL season ended dismally. Pant finished the season with just 343 runs at a strike rate of 113, compared to his total of 1,172 runs at a strike rate of 168 in the previous two seasons. His only fifty came in the final over.

As a result, Pant was left out of the limited-overs squad for the 2020-21 season in Australia. Despite this, he managed to retain his place in the Test squad but was left out of the starting lineup for the first Test match in Adelaide.

Fans and the media castigated Pant during this period. He was often heard compared to Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni. When Pant made mistakes on the field, fans occasionally shouted “Dhoni! Dhoni!”

Although India had a considerable advantage in the first innings, they were bowled out in the second innings, losing by eight wickets in the first Test match of the Border Govaskar Trophy 2020-21 for 36 runs. After this, Rishabh Pant was selected for the second Test match in Melbourne instead of Wriddhiman Saha.

Although Pant scored only 29 runs in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, he had a career breakthrough in Sydney. On the final day, with 97 overs remaining, he fought back with a 97-run knock off just 118 balls and partnered with Chheteshwar Pujara to score 148 runs. In the end, the match ended in a draw.

In September 2021, Pant was selected in the Indian team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In January 2022, Pant was named in the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year 2021 at the ICC annual awards ceremony. In March 2022, Pant became the first Indian batsman to hit a half-century in a Test match in the second match against Sri Lanka, breaking Kapil Dev’s record. He hit the half-century in just 28 deliveries.

In May of the same year, Pant was named vice-captain of the Indian team for the 2022 tour of South Africa. But after Indian captain KL Rahul withdrew from the series due to injury, Pant was named captain a day before the first match of the series. Pant led India in a T20I match at the age of 24 years and 248 days, becoming the second-youngest captain in history. In July 2022, in the last match of India’s tour of England, Pant scored his first hundred in one-day international cricket, scoring 125 without giving up.
