On December 28 1937 Ratan Tata was born in Bombay during the British Raj which is now Mumbai. To enhance the water in hard-to-reach locations Tata helped the University of New South Wales Faculty of Engineering create capacitive deionization. The Tata Tapes dispute was a political scandal in India that came to light as a result of numerous accusations of anti-national behaviour made by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta the then-chief minister of Assam against the Tatas and their company Tata Tea in particular. 

Business tycoon Nusli Wadia was illegally wiretapped and journalist Ritu Sarin of the Indian Express broke the story. On October 4–5 1997 she published transcripts of his phone conversations with Keshub Mahindra Field Marshal Sam Maneckshaw then-Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Jayant Malhoutra and Ratan Tata about Tata Tea’s issues with the Assam Government.

The conversations between Nusli Wadia and numerous influential political and business figures were captured on the tapes Ritu Sarin obtained and they revealed the Tatas’ attempts to enlist the help of the federal government in their disputes with the Assam Government. Mahanta had met with Indian Prime Minister I. K. Gujral and complained to him about K. Padmanabhaiah the Union Home Secretary meddling in the situation. The individuals responsible for tapping Wadia’s phones are still unknown. Since the Intelligence Bureau reports to Padmanabhaiah the Home Secretary the central government denied any involvement.

According to Ratan Tata the revelation violated his right to privacy.
