Khandelwal comes from Kalandri, a town in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan. He is the second son of retired Lieutenant Colonel C.L. Khandelwal and Mrs. Vijay Laxmi Khandelwal. Sanjeev is his older brother, and Rahul is his younger brother. Khandelwal graduated from Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jaipur with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from St. Xavier’s College in Ahmedabad.
Khandelwal adopted Swati, a five-year-old girl, from the Muskaan institute in 2007. On February 7, 2011, he married his longtime lover Manjiri Kamtikar. Khandelwal considers himself an agnostic, yet he respects the opinions of others. He now lives in Goregaon, Mumbai, India.
