Pro Kabaddi League team Puneri Paltan

Puneri Paltan is a kabaddi team representing Pune, Maharashtra, India in the Pro Kabaddi League. The team plays at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex under the guidance of BC Ramesh. Puneri Paltan, the founding players of the Pro Kabaddi League, had a poor performance in the first two seasons of the league (2014 and 2015), finishing at the bottom of the table.

In 2016 (January), Paltan made amends by making it to the playoffs for the first time and eventually finishing third. After missing out on the playoffs in the 2016 (June) season, they secured a playoff spot in 2017. The team failed to make the playoffs in the 2018-19 season. Pune's progress in the Pro Kabaddi season was marred by inconsistency.

Puneri Paltan Owner

Insurekot Sports is a Mumbai-based company with various sports-related businesses and is the owner of the Puneri Paltan franchise in Pune.

Insurekot Sports started its operations at Santacruz, Mumbai on April 9, 2001. Sumanlal Babulal Shah, Rajesh Harkishandas Doshi and Karthi Kumar Venkatraman Marshan are the three current directors of the company.

Sumanlal Shah also serves as a partner or director in several other ventures, including Business Standard Online Private Limited, Infina Finance Ltd, Kotak Commodity Services, etc. Similarly, Mr. Doshi also serves as a director in other organizations such as Insurekot Sports.

The owners often profess a desire to revive the sport of kabaddi and they have organised many competitions to identify and develop emerging talent. For example, they organised a selection camp at the Balewadi Stadium in Pune in 2014, with the winners getting a chance to represent Punaripaltan in the 2015 tournament. The owners have also organised talent trials in certain parts of Maharashtra. With the help of local kabaddi clubs, talented young players are selected to attend a 7-10 day training camp at Balewadi in Pune.

But that's not all. In late 2014, we organised a camp for Little Puneri Champions to promote the sport in the classroom. The school also has a course to teach physical education teachers the basics of kabaddi. According to director Sumanlal Shah, the small towns of our country have exceptional sports talent. But they are often overlooked due to lack of opportunities. We hope to find talented players through these camps and give them a chance to develop and succeed.

Kailash Kandpal, CEO, Insurekot Sports Pvt Ltd and manager, Puneri Paltan, told Indian Education Diary that we want to encourage kabaddi from the grassroots. The best way to do this is through inter-school tournaments as there is a lot of untapped young talent waiting to be discovered. We intend to continue this tradition by hosting such tournaments every year.

Puneri Paltan Team Players 2022

With the experienced Iranian couple joining the young team, Puneri Paltan will look to build on their sixth-place finish in Season 8 and advance all the way to the next round of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 9. To win their first title, Paltan have picked champion coach BC Ramesh, who led Bengal Warriors to the PKL title in Season 7, along with champion players Fazel Atrachali and Mohammad Nabibakhsh. The management spent heavily to bring in the two experienced Iranians, who left U Mumba and Bengal Warriors. Left corner player Atrachali's transfer fee was Rs 1.38 crore, while all-rounder Nabibakhsh's transfer fee was Rs 8.7 crore.

Paltan has retained the emerging raiding unit of Aslam Inamdar and Mohit Goyat, in addition to young defenders Sombir Sanket Sawant and Abinesh Nadarajan. Pankaj Mohite will also remain in the squad and will provide excellent raiding cover for the Pune team. Puneri Paltan will begin its ninth season on October 8 against three-time champions Patna Pirates. Since its debut in PKL in 2014, Puneri Paltan has made the playoffs or semi-finals in four of the past eight seasons.
