Garg’s career is yet to reach its peak, but his selection as captain of India’s U-19 World Cup in South Africa last December was indeed a major turning point. Garg joins Virat Kohli (2008), Mohammad Kaif (2000) and Prithvi Shaw (2018) who have all accepted the captaincy of the Indian team to play for their country.
He led India to the title race but narrowly missed out on their sixth title. On a personal level, Priyam’s performance in the World Cup was not what he would have liked.
Sunrisers Hyderabad paid Rs 1.90 crore to sign Priyam Garg for IPL 2020. His ‘senior’ record reveals why: a first-class average of 66.69, a Grade A average of 47.13 and a T20 strike rate of 132.74 are more than enough to make up for the failure in the U-19 WC. The 2020 season could be crucial in terms of the young player’s growth at the highest level of cricket.
