Paoli Dam is an Indian actress who started her career in the Bengali tv series Jibon Niye Khela (2003). Dam grew up in Kolkata and attended Rajabazar Science College where she earned a postgraduate degree in chemistry. She initially aspired to be a chemical researcher or a pilot. Her first Bengali film Teen Yaari Katha directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha began production in 2004 but did not premiere until 2012. Dam’s debut film directed by Ravi Kinagi was Agnipariksha. Between 2006 and 2009 she acted in five Bengali films rising to popularity with Goutam Ghose’s 2009 Kaalbela. In 2011 she became well-known worldwide for her acting in the Bengali movie Chatrak. This film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival as well as in Toronto and the UK. She started acting in Bollywood with Hate Story in 2012 and she was also part of Ankur Arora Murder Case directed by Vikram Bhatt. In 2016 at the Hyderabad Bengali Film Festival she won the Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Actress for her performance in Natoker Moto.Her most prominent work was in Bulbbul(2020) and Hate Story(2012).

Although it took them some time to talk about their relationship the pair clicked right away. Paoli was stunning in a red silk saree and decorated with copious amounts of gold jewelry, fully embracing her role as a traditional Bengali bride. She complemented her look with a Mukut and the traditional white and red bangles known as Shakha Pola, giving her outfit a more authentic Bengali look. Her groom was also appropriately attired in the customary Bengali dhoti and white kurta that Bengali grooms wear. Career

In Bengali television serials Dam made her acting debut. She made an appearance in Jibon Niye Khela for Zee Bangla in 2003 and then in Jishu Dasgupta’s Tithir Atithi for ETV Bangla which aired for six years. The actress also starred in Sonar Harin Jaya and Tarpor Chand Uthlo. According to Dam Bengali television taught her a lot and prepared her for a career in film. Dam gained attention in 2009 after appearing in seven Bengali movies and Kaalbela’s commercial success (directed by Goutam Ghose). The background of the movie was the 1980s Naxalite uprising which was based on a Bengali novel by Samaresh Majumdar. According to reviews Dam gave a strong performance as Madhabilata the young Naxalite leader’s sweetheart.

Bollywood

Paoli Dam made her Bollywood debut in 2012 with the Vivek Agnihotri- and Vikram Bhatt-produced flick Hate Story. The movie centers on the sex prostitute played by Dam, Kavyah Krishna, and her companion Vicky planning a fraud on a well-known Indian businessman. Dam’s performance received mixed reviews; It is noted that while Paoli did not disappoint and showed respectable acting talents, she failed to effectively convey the dire circumstances of her character. Her performance in the part was nevertheless thought to have been adequate.

After the movie’s commercial success, a sequel was planned, with Surveen Chawla taking the position of Dam. Following Hate Story, Dam featured in Vikram Bhatt’s Ankur Arora Murder Case, a movie made by Sohail Tatari that was based on the genuine account of a little kid who passed away as a result of malpractice. Dam played a lawyer battling for justice, a part she called ‘real and close to life’ and ‘de-glamourized.’

Indian film critic Taran Adarsh praised Dam’s performance and urged her to seek further Bollywood parts after seeing a special screening of her film in Mumbai. In Satish Kaushik’s comedy-horror movie Gang of Ghosts from 2014, Paoli Dam appeared in an item number. She is expected to make an appearance in Subhash Sehgal’s upcoming Hindi film Yaara Silly Silly. Alongside Kay Kay Menon and Raveena Tandon, she is currently scheduled to appear in Ashuu Trikha’s suspenseful drama Jee Jaan Se as a housewife whose life falls apart after her husband’s passing. She has apparently been given a third thriller project after appearing in two Vikram Bhatt movies.

Bengali Movies

Teen Yaari Katha, Paoli Dam’s first Bengali film, was released in 2012 and marked the beginning of her acting career. She appeared in supporting parts in a number of Bengali movies, including Agnipariksha (2006), Tulkalam (2007), I Love You (2008), and Hochheta Ki. Dam gained notoriety for her widely lauded performance as Madhabilata in Kaalbela (2009).

Dam had an appearance in eleven Bengali movies in 2010, one of which being Moner Manush. This was her second collaboration with director Ghose. She starred in Chatrak (2011), a contentious movie with a graphic sex scene. With Hate Story, Dam made her feature film debut in Hindi in 2012. She has acted in Bengali movies like Bedroom, Elar Char Adhyay, and Teen Yaari Katha.

Later, Dam appeared in movies such as Family Album (2014), Chaya Manush, and Obhishopto Nighty (2014). She portrayed the grounded Minu in Hercules (2014) and Ajana Batash in her debut film from 2015, both of which received positive reviews. She appeared in films including Auroni Taukhon, Tobuo Aparichito, and Natoker Moto – including a Play later in 2015.

Bengali Television

After appearing in Bengali television serials, Paoli Dam’s acting career took off. She first appeared in Jibon Niye Khela, a Zee Bangla serial, in 2003. Subsequently, Jishu Dasgupta’s Tithir Atithi, an ongoing ETV Bangla serial, was her first major acting role. Six years of the show’s run were fruitful. Based on Samaresh Majumdar’s novel from the 1980s the film deliberately situates itself inside a certain film tradition particularly radical political Bengali cinema from the 1970s and 1980s. Ghose ties the picture securely within the context of 1970s radical Bengali filmmaking by locating itself and the story it has to convey inside this matrix. Hate Story is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language sexual thriller film directed by Vivek Agnihotri and produced by Vikram Bhatt. It stars Nikhil Dwivedi Gulshan Devaiya and Paoli Dam and was released on April 20 2012. The first entry in the Hate Story film series was a commercial and critical triumph.Paoli Dam gained critical acclaim for her bold and powerful performance in this erotic thriller where she plays a journalist seeking revenge for a sexual assault. The film became contentious because the lead actress accused director Vivek Agnihotri of sexual harassment.

Chaya Manush (2014)

Zulfiqar is a crime drama film released in 2016 directed by Srijit Mukherji. It is a creative fusion of two William Shakespeare tragedies namely Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. The production of the film commenced in January 2016 and it was later released on 7th October during Durga Puja. Paoli Dam plays the role of a powerful and confident woman in this Bengali crime drama film that revolves around the underworld of Kolkata. The film received mixed reviews from critics but it proved to be a box office success in 2016. 

Bulbbul (2020)

Bulbbul is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language supernatural thriller written and directed by Anvita Dutt. It was produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Ssharma under Clean Slate Filmz and stars Tripti Dimri in the lead role alongside Avinash Tiwary Paoli Dam Rahul Bose and Parambrata Chattopadhyay. Tripti Dimri received numerous accolades. The story centres around a child bride and her journey from innocence to strength in the 1880s Bengal presidency. Bulbbul was launched on Netflix on June 24 2020.
