Nutan Samarth Bahl, also known as Nutan, is an Indian actress who has appeared in many Hindi films. She has appeared in more than 70 films, mostly as the lead, in both big-budget and art-house films, ranging from urban romances to literary adaptations to psychological and social realist dramas.
Nutan is considered one of the finest actors in the history of Indian cinema, known for her natural acting style and her portrayal of conflicted female characters that are often considered unconventional. She has won a record five Indian Film Awards for Best Actress and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government in 1974.
Nutan began acting in roles in the 1980s and continued to work until shortly before her death. She played mostly motherly roles in films such as Saajan Ki Saheli (1981), Meri Jung (1985) and Naam (1988). Her performance in Meri Jung (1986) earned her her sixth and final Filmfare Award, this time for Best Supporting Actress.
Nutan died at the age of 54. Nutan Samarth was born in Mumbai on June 4, 1936. Her star sign is Gemini.
Although she had always been interested in performing arts, singing and dancing, she preferred arithmetic and geography in school. She studied classical music for four years with Jagannath Prasad. In 1953, she went to Switzerland to study at La Chatelaine École Supérieure, where her film career had already begun.
Nutan was sent there at her mother’s request after she did a lot of film work and lost a lot of weight. She described the year she spent there as the happiest of her life, and she returned home a year later having gained 22 pounds.
She is the eldest of four children of director and poet Kumarsen Samarth and his wife Shobhna, an actress and film producer. She was born into a Marathi Hindu family and follows Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu. Kumarsen was an early developer of the Indian film sector. She has two elder sisters, Tanuja and Chatura, and a younger brother, Jaideep.
Before Jaideep was born, her parents divorced. On October 11, 1959, Nutan married Indian Navy Lieutenant Commander Rajneesh Bahl. In 1961, their only child, Monish, was born. He later became a television and film actor. In 2004, her husband died in a fire in their apartment.
The film is the culmination of her nearly four-decade career. The plot revolves around the life of a woman sentenced to life in prison for murder. During her imprisonment, she is given a choice between two men: a prison doctor who once saved her life while in prison, and a man she knew from her past.
In Bandini, Nutan plays the protagonist Kalyani, a young woman serving jail time for murder. Nutan’s nuanced portrayal of the character was widely appreciated and won critical acclaim. She deftly conveyed the emotions of a woman who has been wronged by society and struggles to find redemption.
The film is based on the Bengali novel Tamassi by Jharasandar (Charu Chandra Chakrabarti), which tells the story of a former prison warden who spent most of his career as a jailer in North Bengal and created many fictional versions of his experiences. Bandini was the tenth highest-grossing film of the year and was rated a “semi-hit” at the Indian box office despite critical acclaim and a sweep of the Filmfare Awards that year, winning six awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. It is still considered a landmark film of the 1960s, especially as the last feature film of director Bimal Roy.
The film is an adaptation of the classic Bengali story Ras, starring Nutan and rising angry youth Amitabh Bachchan. The plot revolves around a shrewd man who plans to defraud a poor but young widow for personal financial gain. The film is India’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Academy Awards.
In Saudagar, Nutan essays the role of ‘Mahjubhi’, a village girl who falls in love with ‘Veerpurush’ (played by Amitabh Bachchan), a wealthy businessman. The story revolves around the conflict between two families who refuse to accept the relationship between Mahjubhi and Veerpurush. Despite facing numerous obstacles, the couple continues to fight for their love and eventually reunites.

Everything was going well on Devi’s sets until one day a slap from Nutan silenced the entire crew. In 1972, in a heated interview with Stardust, Nutan revealed the reason for slapping her co-star Sanjeev Kapoor in public.
Nutan said from the beginning that it all started after the two worked together on the film “Gouri”. She said: “Since I worked with Sanjeev in “Gouri”, my relationship with him has always been friendly, frank, polite and professional. But that’s all. When I read a report that Sanjeev and I were in a relationship, I was completely surprised.
