On a historic day at Buckingham Palace, King Charles, 75, unveiled a stunning new portrait to the world, revealing his royal face. The lively painting is his first official portrait since his coronation in May 2023. The unveiling on May 14 captured not only his appearance, but also the essence of the monarch who reigns in Britain.
The portrait is enormous, measuring nearly eight and a half feet tall including the frame. Designed by renowned photographer Jonathan Young, the piece was designed to blend in perfectly with the splendor of Drapers Hall, reflecting the magnificence of its architecture. Young, known for his paintings of the likes of Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II and Camilla, adds a modern twist to the tradition of royal painting. His idea was to blend the historical significance of royal portraits with a modern aesthetic reminiscent of a 21st century monarchy.
The work was created over a number of sessions and locations, beginning with a meeting at Highgrove House in June, when Charles was still Prince of Wales. The final touches were given at a workshop at Clarence House in November 2023. The setting provided a personal and intimate backdrop for the gathering, allowing Young to portray the King in the different scenes that shaped his life and reign.
The 76-year-old queen expressed her satisfaction with the portrait, briefly telling the painter, “Yes, you got it.” The queen’s approval is a testament to the accuracy of the painting and the emotional impact it had on those closest to the king. Her words underscore Yang’s efforts to capture the king’s humanity and the depth of his life events.
Following the unveiling, the portrait will be open to the public at the Philip Mould Gallery in London from 16 May to 14 June. Royals and admirers alike will have the opportunity to see this stunning work of art in person, free of charge. Following its exhibition at the gallery, the work will be moved to Drapers’ Hall, where it will be on display until the end of August.
More than just an official representation of King Charles, this portrait is a living record of his ascent to the throne and his vision for a modern monarchy. It is a tribute to his 50 years of service to The Draper’s Company and his service to the public. Jonathan Yeo’s work reveals the essence of the King during a time of change, combining tradition with new perspectives that will redefine royal portraiture for decades to come.
