The film is a spiritual sequel to the 1990 musical film Aashiqui, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, with Shaad Randhawa and Mahesh Thakur in supporting roles, and Salil Acharya in a cameo. Set in the early 2010s, the film tells the story of the turbulent relationship between failed singer Rahul Jaykar and his apprentice, aspiring singer Aarohi Keshav Shirke, which is complicated by Rahul’s problems with alcoholism and a bad temper. Ekta Kapoor had approached Mohit Suri to direct a romantic thriller. Director Suri denied that Ek Villain was a remake of the South Korean film I Saw the Devil. Hamari Adhuri Kahani is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mahesh Bhatt through his Vishesh Films and Fox Star Studios. Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, and Rajkummar Rao star in the film. The film is based on the love story of Bhatt’s parents, Nanabhai Bhatt and Shirin Mohammad Ali, and his stepmother, Hemlata Bhatt. The film was released in theaters worldwide on June 12, 2015, to mixed reviews from critics. As of July 2, the film has grossed 580 million (US$9.04 million) worldwide on a budget of 350 million.
