Mirabai Chanu's Biography

Mirabai Chanu is a famous Indian weightlifter. Mirabai Chanu won the third gold medal for India in the ongoing 2022 Indian Weightlifting Championships with a total score of 201 kg. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she won the silver medal in the women's 49 kg category.

Mirabai Chanu's full name is Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. Mirabai Chanu's birthday is 8 August 1994. As of 2024, Mirabai Chanu's age is 29 years old. Mirabai Chanu's birthplace is Nongpok Kakching, Manipur, India. Mirabai Chanu's zodiac sign is Leo. Mirabai Chanu's height is 1.50 meters or 4'11 inches. Mirabai Chanu's religion is Sanamahism. Seuti Films has also announced that it will produce a biographical Manipur feature film on Mirabai Chanu. Manaobi MM will write the script and OC Meira will direct the film.

Mirabai Chanu's Family and Mirabai Chanu's Education

Mirabai Chanu's father's name is Saikhon Kriti Meitei and her mother's name is Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima. Mirabai Chanu's father is an employee of the Ministry of Public Works and her mother is a shopkeeper. Mirabai Chanu has a brother named Saikhon Sanatomba Meitei.

Mirabai Chanu has two older sisters named Saikhom Rangita and Saikhon Shaya. Mirabai Chanu was born into a Meitei family, a warrior clan in the area. Chanu admits to being a follower of Sanamahism but says she also worships the gods and goddesses of Hinduism. She was just 12 years old when her family first noticed her strength. Her brother even struggled to carry a large bundle of firewood home, but she was able to do it with ease.

Mirabai Chanu's career

Mirabai Chanu wanted to be a weightlifter since she was a child. She says Kunjarani Devi is her idol. As a child, she watched Kunjarani Devi working out on TV. Her competitions were very charismatic and the weights she could lift were amazing. At a local weightlifting competition, Mirabai, then 11, won her first competitive gold medal.

Mirabai Chanu achieved her first major breakthrough at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when she won a silver medal in the 48kg category.

Mirabai Chanu qualified for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics in the women's 48kg category. However, she was unable to complete the competition as she failed to lift the clean and jerk in three attempts.

At the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California, USA, American athlete Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the women's 48kg class with a total score of 194kg (85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk), setting a competition record.

Mirabai Chanu won India's first gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, lifting a total of 196 kg, including 86 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk. She achieved a personal best on her way to the medal, breaking the record for her weight class. She set a personal best total of 199 kg, having missed out on the bronze medal in the 49 kg category at the 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships, as she snatched less than the third-place finisher, despite having the same total.

Mirabai Chanu finished fourth at the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships with a total of 201 kg (87 kg snatch, 114 kg clean and jerk). This personal best also set a new national record in the 49 kg category. Four months later, she won the gold medal in the 49 kg category at the 2020 National Senior Weightlifting Championships with 203 kg (88 kg snatch, 115 kg clean and jerk), setting a new personal best.

In April 2021, Mirabai Chanu won the bronze medal at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent with a snatch of 86 kg, clean and jerk of 119 kg, and a total of 205 kg. In June 2021, Chanu finished second in the absolute ranking 49 kg category and qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics as the only female weightlifter from India.

Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the 49kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics with a total of 202kg. She became the first Indian weightlifter to win the medal, the second Indian weightlifter after Kanum Malleswari, and the second Indian woman to win the medal after PV Sindhu. Chanu managed to lift 115kg in the clean and jerk, setting a new Olympic record. Her win earned India its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

After the Tokyo Olympics, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that Mirabai Chanu will receive a reward of Rs 1 crore. Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that she will receive a reward of Rs 2 crore, promotion, etc.

Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the 49kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. She performed the snatch and clean and jerk, with a total score of 201 kg.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu received congratulations from actress Tiska Chopra after winning the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. But she chose the wrong picture. The internet community got angry and started to torture her for it. The actor has deleted the tweet and apologized. In the congratulatory message, Chopra used the picture of Indonesian weightlifter Aisha Wendy Kantika instead of Chanu's picture.

The opposition parties shamefully mocked the Olympic champion with offensive remarks. Besides focusing on the Olympian's achievements, the Congress party also commented on her weight. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala retweeted a very crude and derogatory cartoon from the Bhaskar Daily titled 'Mehengai Maar Gayi' to criticise the Modi government for increasing petrol prices.
