Mirabai Chanu won India's first gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, lifting a total of 196 kg, including 86 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk. She achieved a personal best on her way to the medal, breaking the record for her weight class. She set a personal best total of 199 kg, having missed out on the bronze medal in the 49 kg category at the 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships, as she snatched less than the third-place finisher, despite having the same total.
Mirabai Chanu finished fourth at the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships with a total of 201 kg (87 kg snatch, 114 kg clean and jerk). This personal best also set a new national record in the 49 kg category. Four months later, she won the gold medal in the 49 kg category at the 2020 National Senior Weightlifting Championships with 203 kg (88 kg snatch, 115 kg clean and jerk), setting a new personal best.
In April 2021, Mirabai Chanu won the bronze medal at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent with a snatch of 86 kg, clean and jerk of 119 kg, and a total of 205 kg. In June 2021, Chanu finished second in the absolute ranking 49 kg category and qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics as the only female weightlifter from India.
Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the 49kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics with a total of 202kg. She became the first Indian weightlifter to win the medal, the second Indian weightlifter after Kanum Malleswari, and the second Indian woman to win the medal after PV Sindhu. Chanu managed to lift 115kg in the clean and jerk, setting a new Olympic record. Her win earned India its first medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
After the Tokyo Olympics, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that Mirabai Chanu will receive a reward of Rs 1 crore. Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that she will receive a reward of Rs 2 crore, promotion, etc.
