The son of a Canadian military career officer, actor Michael J. Fox made his television debut in Vancouver at age 15. Three years later, he moved to the U.S., living in spartan conditions until he got his green card. Things began to change for Fox in 1980, when he simultaneously worked in American TV and film, winning a regular role in the weekly series Palmerstown, USA and a supporting role in the dramatic film Midnight Madness. The actor formerly known as Michael Fox was forced by the Screen Actors Guild to add a “J” to his name to avoid confusion with an older character actor known by the same name. At 5’4″, the baby-faced Fox was able to play teens and adolescent roles well into his twenties; however, during the early part of his career, his height caused him to lose as many roles as he could get.

In 1999, the diminutive actor lent his talents to another small role, voicing the lead role of Stuart Little, a walking, talking mouse, for the film adaptation of E.B. White’s beloved children’s book.
