On 14 July 2015, Pandey played his first One-Day International (ODI) for India against Zimbabwe. He partnered Kedar Jadhav and had a strong first-match performance, scoring 144 runs. As India struggled to score 82 for the loss of 4 wickets, Pandey took over batting alongside Jadhav. He scored his first half-century before being bowled out for 71 runs. On 17 July 2015, he made his Twenty20 International debut for India on the same tour. However, six months later, in Sydney, Pandey played his most important international innings. In January 2016, his first unbeaten One-Day International century helped India beat Australia by 330 with two balls left to avoid a sweep.

He was selected in the ODI squad for the tour of Australia in January 2016. He played a winning innings of 104* in the final match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, giving India a one-match series win. He was selected as a replacement for Yuvraj Singh for the Indian team in the 2016 World T20 Championship. In June 2017, he was selected in the 15-man Champions Trophy squad. However, he got injured during the IPL and could not represent India in ICC matches. He was selected in the Indian ODI and T20I squads for the June 2021 series against Sri Lanka.

He was selected for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2008. On 21 May 2009, while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he scored a hundred, becoming the first Indian to score a hundred in an IPL match.

Kolkata Knight Riders then picked him up in 2014. He won the Man of the Match award in the championship match against Kings XI Punjab with 94 runs. He was among the top ten in both the 2014 (401 runs in 16 matches) and 2017 IPL seasons (396 runs in 13 matches). In 2018, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 110 million. Due to his poor form, he spent most of the 2021 IPL on the bench. In the 2022 IPL auction, Lucknow Supergiants bought Manish Pandey for Rs 460 million.
