Krishnakumar Kunnath (23 August 1968 – 31 May 2022), commonly known as KK, was an Indian dubbing singer. He recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati. KK started his career singing advertising jingles and made his film debut in 1996 on the AR Rahman soundtrack.

His debut album Pal was released in 1999. Songs Pal and Yaaron from the album have grown in popularity and are now played at school graduation ceremonies. His popular songs include Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), the Tamil song Apadi Podu from Devdas, Dola Re Dola (2002), Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai from Woh Lamhe… (2006), Aankhon Mein Teri from Om Shanti Om (2007), Khuda Jane from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Piya Aaye Na from Aashiqui 2 (2013), Mat Aazma Re from Murder 3 (2013), India Wale from Happy New Year (2014), and Tu Jo Mila from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015).

In 2009, he won the Best Male Screen Singer Award for the song “Khuda Jaane” from the film “Bachna Ae Haseeno”. KK has been nominated for six Filmfare Awards.

KK completed his schooling from Mount St. Mary’s School in Delhi and attended Kirorimal College in Delhi University.

KK was born in a Malayali family from Thrissur district in Kerala. His father’s name is CS Nair and mother’s name is Kunnath Kanakavalli.

In 1991, KK married his long-time girlfriend Jyothy Lakshmi Krishna, a professional painter.

He was unemployed at the time, and in order to marry her, he found a sales job. He worked in sales for six months before he was eligible to get married.

They have a son named Nakul Krishna Kunnath and a daughter named Tamara Kunnath. They are singers, music composers and music producers.

Profession

After graduating from Kirori Mal College with a degree in commerce, KK worked as a marketing executive for six months before pursuing his passion for music. Struggling to make a name for himself in the competitive record industry, he sang in hotels to make ends meet. In 1994, KK moved to Mumbai.

In 1994, KK presented a demo tape to Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot and Lesle Lewis. UTV approached him to sing a jingle for a Santogen Suiting ad. In four years, KK sang about 3,500 jingles in 11 languages. He considers Lesle Lewis his mentor as he gave him his first jingle in Mumbai. KK then went on to work as a voice-over singer, starting with Hello Dr. in AR Rahman’s Kalluri Saaley and Kadir’s Kadhal Desam, and Strawberry Kannae in AVM Productions’ 1997 musical film Minsara Kanavu.

KK made his Bollywood debut in 1999 with the song Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se from the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Earlier, he had performed a portion of Chhod Aaye Hum in Gulzar’s Maachis (1996). KK considers Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se as a turning point in his career. Tamil Songs

KK has sung hit songs in many languages, including Tamil. According to Outlook, his songs represent Tamil film music in the 21st century and have become part of Tamil culture. KK’s Tamil song Appadi Podu became popular in India in 2004 and is played in clubs and weddings. In 1997, he collaborated with AR Rahman on the hit song Strawberry Kanne.

In the 2000s, he had a decade of hit singles. In 2001, KK sang Love Pannu for Harris Jayaraj, followed by Kadhal Oru Thani Katchi and Gundu Gundu Ponne. Harris Jayaraj had two hits in 2003: Uyirin Uyire and Kalyanam Dhaan Kattitkittu. Uyirin Uyire became increasingly popular in the cities, while Kalyanam Dhaan Kattitkittu spread across Tamil Nadu.

KK performed in Yuvan Shankar Raja’s composition Kadhal Valarthen. He collaborated with Harris Jayaraj and Yuvan Shankar Raja to create two successful songs: Kadhalikkum Aasai and Ninaithu Ninaithu. Harris Jayaraj’s composition Andankaaka Kondaikaari was also a hit. KK sang the song Annanoda Paatu in the film Chandramukhi. Other hit Tamil songs include Pani Thuli, Olikuchi Udambukari and Lelakku Lelakku Lela. Although KK was born in a Malayalam family in Thrissur, he sang only one Malayalam song in his 25-year career: Rahasyamay in Puthiya Mukham (2009).

He has sung many songs on television shows like Just Mohabbat, Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Kuch Jhuki Si Palkein, Hip Hip Hurray, Kkavyanjali and Just Dance. KK has been a judge on the talent show Fame Gurukul.

He sang Tanha Chala in the Pakistani television show Ghost, which was aired on Hum TV in 2008. The song was composed by Farrukh Abid and Shoiab Farrukh, and the lyrics were written by Momina Duraid.

KK sang Qawwali Chadta Suraj with Sabri Brothers and reprised Tu Aashiqui Hai from Jhankaar Beats on MTV India music show Coke Studio. He appeared on Surili Baat on Aaj Tak channel. KK appeared on Sony Mix and MTV Unplugged, both of which aired on MTV on 11 January 2014. In April 2014, he hosted the Salaam Dubai 2014 concert in Dubai and he has also performed in Goa, Dubai, Chennai and Hong Kong.

On 29 August 2015, KK made his debut as a judge and guest juror on the second season of the television singing competition show Indian Idol Junior. On 13 September of the same year, he appeared on the Sony Mix show Baaton Baaton Mein. In a 2019 interview with Hindustan Times, KK stated that he was involved in the music industry through live concerts and playback singing. He was happy with his live performances; he did not want to give up on his commitment to the audience and was looking to release a new record following the success of his second album in 2008.

Tadap Tadap Play

Tadap Tadap is a popular Hindi song from the 1999 Bollywood film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK) and Dominique Cerejo sang the song, which was composed by Ismail Darbar and lyrics by Mehboob.

On May 31, 2022, KK was performing at a college event at Nazrul Mancha in South Kolkata. After the performance, he returned to the Esplanade Hotel. KK reported feeling unwell on the way back to the hotel, when he suffered a cardiac arrest. He fell down and efforts to revive him at the hotel were futile. At around 10:30 pm, KK was rushed to the Kolkata Institute of Medical Sciences, where he was declared brought dead.

The West Bengal government fired a gun in honor of KK at Rabindra Sadan in Kolkata. The gun-firing ceremony was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and was also attended by celebrities and politicians from the film and music industry, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. KK’s body was brought to Mumbai and his funeral was held the next day (June 2) at the Versova Hindu Cemetery. The attendees included family, friends and colleagues.
