JJ Valaya’s Biography

JJ Valaya was born on 8th October 1967. JJ Valaya’s real name is Jag Sharan Jit Singh Ahluwalia. JJ Valaya is one of India’s most renowned fashion designers and creators. He is often referred to as the King of Indian Fashion due to his unique fashion trends that exude regal opulence and pre-independence splendor while incorporating a dash of contemporary sensibility to make it unique. The House of Valaya was founded by JJ Valaya and his brother TJ Singh.

The legendary designer has been creating high-end fashion for men and women for the past 20 years, focusing on evening wear and bridal collections in addition to ready-to-wear and daywear. JJ Valaya is a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and the first global brand ambassador of Swarovski, the market leader in the crystal industry. JJ Valaya was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Born into a military family, he grew up in several cities in India along with his two elder brothers. He remained the best calligrapher and artist in his school for five consecutive years, which speaks volumes about his creativity. His early education was completed at YadavIndra Public School, Mohali. Valaya initially intended to become a chartered accountant after studying commerce in college.

Eventually, he enrolled in NIFT, New Delhi to study Fashion Designing and obtained his degree in 1991. My family is military and all the men in my family have served in the Indian Army. JJ Valaya’s father is Jagjit Singh Ahluwalia, who retired from the Corps of Engineers as a Brigadier. My two brothers, one in the Army Medical Corps and the other in the Artillery, both retired before their service. JJ Valaya’s mother Raj is an expert in children’s wear, specialising in embroidered evening gowns. My late aunt Parmeshwar Godrej was one of the greatest fashionistas and style icons of India during her time. JJ Valaya’s wife is Meghna Valaya. JJ Valaya’s daughters Hoorvi and Someya are from Jalandhar.

Before launching his own label, Valaya apprenticed with Indian fashion pioneer Rohit Khosla. In 1992, Valaya co-founded The House of Valaya with his brother Tribhavan Jit Singh and launched a couture line. Valaya’s success as a luxury brand is largely attributed to Valaya’s creative vision and his brother’s organizational skills. When he launched his own couture line in 2003, he began selling fashion and lifestyle items under three brands: JJ Valaya Studio Valaya and Valaya Home-Life. His first couture label, JJ Valaya, debuted in 1993 with his trousseau collection. He channeled his inner storyteller in this book by telling stories of Indian imperial court musicians and their relationships with local princes. His Fall/Winter collection Alika includes elaborately crafted tunic saris, Anarkali-churidar and jalabiyas. Valaya tells interesting stories through his couture designs. This could be a factor in his interest in India’s royal history. His signature Alika jacket is also introduced in this collection.

Valaya’s TASVEER Winter/Festive collection was shown at Lakme Fashion Week 2011 to great acclaim. Valaya’s dual love for fashion and photography was incorporated into this collection. The evolution of photography from black and white to sepia to hand-dyed real and digital photographs became the inspiration for the collection. It is a wonderful story conveyed through the clothes, taking you on an exciting journey of color. Valaya commented in an interview, I almost have two roles: photographer and costume designer. There are also about ten menswear looks, including sherwanis, bandhgalas, jodhpurs and Nehru jackets, indicating that I want to keep both alive.

The AZRAK collection at Wills India Fashion Week Valaya 2012 embraced the meaning of the unusual and the ordinary. The Turkish Ottoman Empire and West Asia were the inspirations for the collection. His designs contrasted simple and ornate silhouettes and traditional themes from the West and India with contemporary drapes and feminine forms. The collection included dresses, jodhpurs, jackets, saris and blouses from Anarkali. Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut stole the show in a stunning white gown, a beautiful brocade Maharaja jacket and Indian ethnic jewellery. The 12 models who walked the runway for the designer included Suneet Verma, Rohit Bal, Navtej Johar, Jamie Stewart, Sumant Jayakrishnan and Navin Ansal among others.

In 2012, JJ Valaya will complete 20 years in the fashion industry. As part of a series of events, the designer launched a limited edition calendar for this fiscal year in Delhi. The calendar from April 2012 to March 2013 features photos of Valaya’s close friends and talented people, shot by renowned fashion photographer Tarun Khiwal. To combat piracy and counterfeiting in the market, Valaya created the Datsun pattern, which consists of two inverted Vs and a sun pattern in the JJ Valaya emblem. Now, every garment produced by the company features this pattern in some way.

The Council of Fashion Design Councils of India was founded by JJ Valaya. The designer now employs 250 embroiderers and artisans in a 40,000 sq ft office in Delhi.
