She had, however, already established herself in the business as a child performer in the 1960 films Pyar Ki Pyaas, Zameen Ke Taare, and Sangeet Samrat Tansen. She was in the studios with Ravi Shankar when the Beatles were visiting.

Although her last name eventually changed to Karnataki because she later married, she adopted the name Jayshree T based on her original surname of Tarnade. She chose the name to set herself apart from other actors, such as Rajashree Shantaram.

According to her, it was Gopi Kishan who spotted her dancing in a film. Initially, she wanted to become a doctor, but film director Amit Bose cast her in a dance sequence for Abhilasha in 1968, after she was recommended by choreographer Harmendar. After that, she danced in more than 500 movies in the 1970s and 1980s. She has performed sympathetic and comedic vampire roles. In addition to Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marwadi, Rajastani, English, Sindhi, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Haryani, Garyali, Nepali, Punjabi, Marathi, and Gujarati, Jayshree has performed in these languages as well.
