Jagjit Singh (born Jagmohan Singh Diman; 8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) was an Indian composer, singer and musician. He composed and sang songs in many languages ​​and contributed to the revival and popularization of the Indian classical art form of ghazal. He selected poems that were relevant to the masses and composed them in a way that placed greater emphasis on the meaning of words and melody. In terms of Indian classical music, his style of composition and gayaki (singing) is considered Bol-pradhan, a style that focuses on words. He featured this in the music of the films Prem Geet (1981), Arth (1982) and Saath Saath (1982), and the television series Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). Singh is considered the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time, both in terms of critical acclaim and commercial success. With a career spanning five decades and multiple albums, the scope and breadth of his work is considered genre-defining. Singh’s 1987 album, Beyond Time, was India’s first digitally recorded album. He is considered one of India’s most influential artists. Along with sitarist Ravi Shankar and other leading figures in Indian classical music and literature, Singh has voiced his concerns about the politicization of Indian art and culture and the lack of support for practitioners of India’s traditional art forms, especially folk artists and musicians. He actively supports several charities, such as the St. Mary’s School Library in Mumbai, Bombay Hospital, CRY, Save the Children and ALMA. In 2003, the Indian government awarded Singh the Padma Shri, and in February 2014, the Indian government issued a set of two stamps in his honour.

In 1990, Vivek Singh (son of Jagjit Singh and Chitra) died in a car accident at the age of 20. This was a heavy blow to Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh. After Singh’s death, they gave up music for a whole year. At the end of that period, Jagjit slowly returned to the music industry, while Chitra announced her retirement and announced that she would not sing or record any more songs. Singh suffered from multiple diseases in his later years, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and underwent two heart bypass surgeries in 1998 and 2007. He was a chain smoker for decades and gave up smoking after his first heart attack.

In February 2011, Singh turned 70. To celebrate his 70th birthday, he held 70 concerts around the world. In 2011, he toured the UK, Singapore, Mauritius and was scheduled to perform in Mumbai with Ghulam Ali, but on September 23, 2011, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in a coma for more than two weeks and died on October 10 at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. The next day, he was cremated at Chandanwadi Crematorium near Marine Lines in Mumbai. After Singh’s death, many people paid tribute to him, and some tried to make money from his popularity, but were criticized by his wife.

Jagjit Singh Diman was born in Sriganganagar (then Bikaner) in Rajasthan, India. His father, Sardar Amar Singh Diman, was a surveyor in the government public works department and hailed from Dara village in Ropar district, Punjab. Singh was initially educated at Khalsa High School and Government College in Sriganganagar and later obtained an arts degree from DAV College, Jalandhar. There he began his career in 1961, singing and composing for All India Radio (AIR)’s Jalandhar station. Later, he pursued a postgraduate degree in history at Kurukshetra University in Haryana. During this period, Singh studied music first with Pandit Chagan Lal Sharma, a visually impaired Indian classical music master, and later with Ustad Jamal Khan of the Mehar school, as his father discovered his talent.Ustad Jamal Khan taught and trained Singh in all the famous traditional styles of Hindustani classical vocal music, such as Kajal, Dhrupad, Thumri, etc. During his teenage years, he continued to perform and compose music on stage. Although his father, a government servant, wanted Singh to become an engineer, Singh persevered in pursuing his love for music. Like all parents in middle-class Indian families, his father wanted him to become a bureaucrat. However, he also encouraged Singh and his siblings to learn music. In March 1965, Singh moved to Bombay without telling his family because the Hindi film industry there offered many opportunities for musical artists. He started out as an advertising song singer and later rose to the position of backup singer.

• In 2012, the Rajasthan government posthumously awarded Jagjit Singh the state’s highest civilian award, the Rajasthan Treasure Award.

• Jagjit Singh (born Jagmohan Singh) obtained his arts degree from DAV College in Jalandhar.

• He started his career in 1961 with All India Radio (AIR)’s Jalandhar station as a singer and composer.

• Jagjit Singh’s family was not rich. When he was a child, he could only study with a lantern because there was no electricity at home. In an interview, Singh said that there was not even running water at home.

• His father, Sardar Amar Singh Diman, was a government servant who wanted Jagjit to become an engineer.

• In December 1969, he married Chitra Dutta, and together they released The Unforgettable in 1976.

• Their joint projects came to an end in 1990 when their 18-year-old son Vivek was killed in a road accident. After these events, Chitra felt that he could no longer sing. Chitra’s daughter Monica, born to his first wife, committed suicide in 2009.
