Born into an aristocratic family in Bengal, Himanshu Rai grew up in peacetime and received his education there. After earning a law degree in Calcutta, he headed to London with the intention of becoming a lawyer. It was in London that he met playwright and screenwriter Niranjan Pal and began an important collaboration. They co-directed the film Light of Asia, in which Rai played a prominent role. During the shooting of his third film, Prapancha Paash, Rai met Devika Rani, a descendant of Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, and soon developed a deep bond with her. Before the film was completed, Rai and Rani tied the knot and embarked on a personal and professional journey together.

Himanshu Rai had two wives in his life. His first wife was Mary Heinlein, whom he married in 1924. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1926.

During the shooting of his third film, Prapancha Pas, Rai met Devika Rani, who happened to be the great-grandniece of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The two fell in love and Rai married Devika Rani before the film was completed.

Rai’s second and most famous spouse was Devika Rani, whom he married in 1929. They were married until Rai’s untimely death in 1940. They had one daughter, Nilima Dietze (née Hainlin), who was born in 1926 and died in 1997.

Born into an aristocratic Bengali family, Himanshu Rai spent much of his formative years in Santiniketan. He left Calcutta with a law degree and headed for London, intent on becoming a lawyer. There, he met playwright and screenwriter Niranjan Pal, and they began collaborating on the film, Light of Asia, which he co-directed. In addition to directing, Rai also acted in the play.

Later, Rai and Sashadhar Mukherjee worked together at Bombay Talkies Studios. At this time, Mukherjee’s brother-in-law Ashok Kumar became involved, who initially worked as a technician at the studio. There were rumors that Devika Rani was having a relationship with Najmul Hassan, who played the male lead in the film Jeevan Naiya. Therefore, Rai asked Ashok Kumar to replace Hassan. This choice proved to be crucial as Kumar later had a brilliant career in the film industry.

Jewannaia

Franz Osten and Himanshu Rai collaborated on the 1936 Indian film Jeevan Naiya, both directors and producers of the Bombay Talkies. It was Ashok Kumar’s debut as a young superstar. The film’s theme was the rejection experienced by a dancer. Franz Osten, Himanshu Rai, writers JS Kashyap and Niranjan Pal, and the heroine at the time, Devika Rani, all rose to fame due to their successful collaboration in the film Jeevan Naiya.

The film features Ashok Kumar’s famous song Koi Humdum Na Raha. Jamuna Swarup Kashyap (JS Kashyap) and Saraswati Devi composed the song. It is noteworthy that Kishore Kumar later sang Koi Humdum Na Raha in the 1961 film Jhumroo.

Javani Ki Hawa

In 1959, M. Sadiq directed the Indian film Jawani Ki Hawa, starring Johnny Walker, Vyjayanthimala and Pradeep Kumar.

The film revolves around Lata (Vyjayanthimala), a brave young woman, who plays hide-and-seek with TTE on a train to Mumbai. A penniless graduate, Chand (Pradeep Kumar), is forced to pay for Lata’s fare and gives her most of the money when they meet. Upon reaching Mumbai, their misadventure lands them in court, where they are charged as vagabonds. Thanks to Lata’s cunning, they are cleared of all charges and continue to pursue their respective goals.

As time goes by, Chand encounters employment difficulties and falls into the mischief of Dakosla (Johnny Walker), losing all his property, including his coat. In his difficulties, Chand meets the eccentric millionaire Banaras Das (Badri Prasad), who offers Chand a chance to get rich as long as he finds and brings back his long-lost child Sandhya (Badri Prasad). Chand’s determination and resilience are tested after falling into the rabbit hole.

Prapancha Park

German-born Franz Osten directed the 1929 silent film “Dice,” based on a scene from the Indian epic poem “The Mahabharata.”

The two kings in the story, Ranjit and Sohan, are both infatuated with the hermit’s daughter Sunita because of her beauty. Since they both love gambling, the two kings decide to play a dice game to settle the dispute, and the winner will have the opportunity to marry Sunita. Sunita wants to marry Ranjit, but luck favors the dishonest Sohan, so Ranjit loses the game and ends up as Sohan’s slave.

However, Sunita soon learns the true nature of Sohan’s evil deeds. In order to escape punishment, Sohan jumps off a cliff into the rapids below. After Sohan disappears, Ranjit and Sunita are finally able to come together and marry, overcoming the challenges that had previously held them back.

“Dice” is a silent film, which means it contains no dialogues, but is accompanied by music and subtitles to convey the story to the audience.
