Haryana Steelers

The Pro Kabaddi League team Haryana Steelers (HAR) is based in Panchkula, Haryana. Currently, Manpreet Singh is the coach of the team and Joginder Singh Narwal is the captain. JSW Sports, a subsidiary of the Jindal South West (JSW) Group, is the owner of the team. The Steelers’ home ground (in Panchkula) is the Taudviral Stadium. The Steelers made a strong start in the PKL league, reaching the playoffs in the inaugural season in 2017. However, the success was short-lived as the team finished last in the A Division in the second year (2018-19).

Haryana Steelers had a good start in PKL 2019. With the strength of the Raiders, they made it to the playoffs and thus won the title. However, Haryana Steelers failed to win the title due to defensive errors in the semi-final against U Mumba. In 2019, the team had the best overall performance. The team coach Rakesh Kumar led the team to the playoffs and became a prolific Pro Kabaddi League coach.

JSW Sports Private Limited is the franchise owner of the Haryana Steelers. The JSW Group is one of India’s leading business giants and is headed by Sajjan Jindal. They are recognised for their contribution to the development of sports in India and are also the owners of Bengaluru FC, a current ISL team and former I-League champions. The Blues won the title in their inaugural season of the I-League, India’s top professional club league, and repeated the feat in 2016. The current Confederations Cup champions made history by becoming the first team to play in the AFC Cup final.

JSW also owns the Bangalore Yodhas wrestling team, which reached the semi-finals of the first professional wrestling league, and also owns kabaddi and football clubs. Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli is a co-owner of the company. The possibility of JSW buying a franchise of the Hockey India League (HIL) is also under discussion.

Firstpost said the steel giant had first rejected an offer to buy the team during the inaugural season of PKL in 2014. According to Mustafa Ghouse, CEO of JSW Sports, handling the bandwidth of two different sports leagues simultaneously was a challenge as the company had started working with Bengaluru FC only a year ago.

For JSW Group side Haryana Steelers, the Pro Kabaddi League has been a rollercoaster ride. Manjit

The top scorer of the Tamil Televas was in high demand at the auction. He was the only all-rounder in the team last season and scored 159 runs. The 25-year-old was the best player they signed at the auction for Rs 80 lakh. He will replace Vikash Kandola as the main attacking player for the Steelers. Manjit has been performing well for the Patna Pirates and the service team Puneri Paltan over the years.

Vinay

Vinay Vinay continues to hold the title of top player for Rs 2.5 crore and will play for Haryana Steelers for the fourth consecutive year. With 125 raid points he has scored in his first season, he is among the top 15 raiders. He has six Super Raids and three Super 10s and plans to have an injury-free season.

Rakesh Nawal

The left-wing attacker has played for five different teams during his long career in the league. He played for Gujarat Giants last season, accumulating 73 runs in 16 games, and now he is back with Haryana Steelers.

Mitu

Meetu Sharma is a reliable pre-auction holdover who has been very consistent this season with 75 raid points in 16 games, including three Super 10s. He has added to the Steelers’ raiding wealth and on paper, the Steelers appear to be heading for a successful season.

Prapajan

Haryana is home to another PKL traveller who has played for six different teams. Although Prapanjan’s price tag has dropped from Rs 7.1 crore to Rs 10 lakh, he has proven himself to be a skilled left-wing attacker who offers plenty of experience.

Sushila Gulia

In Season 7, the fit raider made his debut for Jaipur Pink Panthers, scoring 21 raid points in 48 raids. His second season was rather low-key, with just one appearance. During this time, he made a significant contribution to Varandaon Ordnance Factory.

Mohammed Ismail Magsoudlu Mahali
