Hariprasad Chalasiya is an Indian flutist who plays the bansuri (a bamboo flute originating from northern India). He is considered one of India’s greatest living musicians. He played an important role in popularizing Indian classical music throughout the world.

Born on July 1, 1938 in Allahabad, Hariprasad Chaurasia did not come from a musical family. His father wanted him to be a wrestler and even taught him Akada for a while. At 15, he began learning vocal music from his neighbor Rajaram without telling his family. Soon after, he heard the famous bansuri player Bholanath play and became his disciple for eight years.

In 1957, he started working as a resident artist at All India Radio in Cuttack, Odisha. Later, he was transferred to Bombay, where he trained under the legendary music teacher Annapurna Devi. He then left All India Radio to pursue a career in acting.

Hariprasad Chaurasia started out as a stenographer to support his family and later became a resident artiste at All India Radio and moved to Cuttack.

1967 marked the beginning of one of the greatest collaborations in Indian music history. Hariprasad Chaurasia met renowned santur player Shivkumar Sharma. Together they formed the duo Shiv-Hari and recorded the album Calling of the Valley in 1967. The album, with its innovative use of guitar and unconventional musical arrangements, attracted a large global audience and became one of the most successful Indian classical music albums of all time.

Shiv-Hari has composed music for several Bollywood films such as Silsila starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha.

Hariprasad Chaurasia’s skill in playing the bansuri has earned him praise from other renowned musicians like Yehudi Menuhin. He has also collaborated with other renowned Indian classical musicians like Zakir Hussain.

He is also a passionate music teacher and founded Vrindavan Gurukul to teach the bansuri in the Guru-shishya tradition. His students include Rakesh Chaurasia and the flute sisters Debopriya and Suchismita Chatterjee.

For his significant contribution to music, Hariprasad Chaurasia was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2000.

· In 2004, he received the Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award
