During Lt Col Narain’s service in the NDA, hundreds of cadets were given ground and aviation training in preparation for entry into the armed forces. In July 2017, an Indian Air Force Cheetah helicopter piloted by Lt Col Gautam Narain from the Swac headquarters in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, rescued a critically ill kidney patient from the rooftop of a submerged house in the flood-ravaged Abiyana village in Patan district of Gujarat. The rescue operation was a success and the patient was safely taken to the hospital after the pilot handed over the patient to the central Patan authorities. The above scenario is based on the idea that the Lt Col officer who rescued the patient is also Gunjan Saxena’s wife.
After leaving the Indian Air Force in 2004, Gunjan has been out of the public eye to make up for all the time she missed during her service. Gunjan reportedly gave birth to a daughter named Pragya in 2004. Gunjan and Narain also reportedly have a son. In 2020, immediately after the release of her military biopic, Gunjan created a social media account. We are unable to get pictures of her husband and children as there are no family photos on her profile.
Gunjan Saxena’s Indian Air Force
Saxena was one of the six women pilots who joined the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1996. This was the fourth induction of women air recruits by the IAF. As a Flight Lieutenant in 132 Forward Area Control (FAC), Saxena’s first assignment was in Udhampur. Flying Officer Saxena was stationed in Srinagar during the Kargil War when she was 24 years old. Apart from helping evacuate the wounded as part of Operation Vijay during the Kargil War, she also assisted in delivering supplies to the troops stationed in the Dras and Batalik frontline areas.
She was also given surveillance duties such as mapping enemy positions. She had to deal with makeshift landing zones and enemy fire at altitudes of 13,000 to 18,000 feet. She was one of ten pilots stationed in Srinagar and flew multiple missions throughout the conflict, rescuing more than 900 people who were wounded, dead or missing. Saxena was the only woman pilot in the Indian Armed Forces during the Kargil War. Her eight-year career as a helicopter pilot ended in 2004. She was not offered a permanent posting during her service.

Flight Lieutenants Gunjan Saxena and Srividya Rajan did fly through an area where the Pakistani army was firing on almost everything, even though they had never flown a fighter jet. The fighting was so intense that the army needed every pilot they could get. Women pilots were drafted in and given the task of scouting Pakistani positions, airdropping supplies and performing medical evacuations in conflict zones.
The two brave fighters kept flying back and forth over the dangerous terrain of North Kashmir, unaware that their small Cheetah helicopter was unarmed and completely helpless in the face of enemy attacks. According to reports, during one attack, Gunjan’s helicopter was about to take off from Kargil Airport when it was hit by a rocket fired by the Pakistani Army. The missile narrowly missed the helicopter and hit the hill behind it.
Saxena and Rajan had had numerous near-death experiences, but that didn’t stop them. That day, they, like other Indian soldiers, were ready to die for their country. In case their plane crashed near an enemy base, Gunjan carried a loaded INSAS assault rifle and a revolver so they could fight to the death.
She claims that evacuating wounded Indian servicemen was her biggest inspiration throughout the conflict. “In my opinion, it was the best feeling a helicopter pilot could possibly experience. One of our main duties there was to evacuate the wounded. Since you are there to save lives, I guess it was a very rewarding experience,” she said.
Gunjan’s career as a helicopter pilot ended after seven years of service due to lack of opportunities for women in the Army. Gunjan received the Shaurya Vir Award for her extraordinary courage during the Kargil War, a gallantry award given for heroic acts of bravery or self-sacrifice without direct engagement with the enemy.
Autobiography of Gunjan Saxena
Gunjan Saxena is the protagonist of a chapter in the book “Secrets of the Kargil War” written by Rachna Bisht Rawat. Kiran Nirvan and Gunjan Saxena’s autobiography “The Kargil Girl” was published by Penguin Books at the same time as the film. Many print and electronic media such as BBC India, CNN Network 18 Forbes India, Hindustan Times, Tribune, etc. have given high scores and five-star reviews to the book. Hindustan Times praised the book for never being jingoistic, but being measured and realistic, and for its wonderful depiction of moving, dramatic and fascinating scenes, which makes it an engaging read.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is a 2020 Hindi biographical drama film directed by Sharan Sharma and produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. It stars Angad Bedi and Pankaj Tripathi in supporting roles, while Janhvi Kapoor plays Indian Air Force pilot Gunjan Saxena, one of the first female fighter pilots in India (she arrived with Sreevidya Rajan’s second crew). Principal photography began in February 2019 and ended in October; it was shot extensively throughout Lucknow. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the film could not be released in traditional theaters and was picked up by Netflix for distribution. On August 12, 2020, the world learned about the film.
After the release of the film Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, there has been a lot of misconception about some of the facts associated with Saxena. She cleared the air on some of these in an article she published. During my time in the IAF, I was blessed and honoured to have achieved many firsts. These include: being the first woman to fly in a war zone (listed in the Limka Book of Records); being the first woman to be awarded the coveted BG flying category among women helicopter pilots; being the first woman officer to complete a jungle and snow survival course. There were other small successes as well, but they don’t really matter to my story, do they?
I have never claimed to have won the Shaurya Chakra award and neither have the filmmakers. After the Kargil war, a non-profit organization in Uttar Pradesh awarded me the Shaurya Veer award. Veer may have been mistranslated as Chakra in online news. I clarified this several times while dealing with the media to promote the film.
