Ghulam Mustafa Khan Biography, Career, Awards

pass

Ghulam Mustafa Khan is an acclaimed Hindustani classical singer. He is a mentor to some of the most popular singers in Bollywood. There are very few pop singers who have not been taught by him.

He played a key role in helping to keep alive the tradition of Hindustani classical singing and encouraging new generations to continue their studies.

Born on March 3, 1931 in Badyun, Uttar Pradesh, he began learning music, especially the Rampur-Sahaswan school, from Nisar Hussain Khan at the age of five. He received rigorous training in Indian classical music and gave his first performance at the age of eight with his father.

Profession

He has been teaching music and performing since the 1950s. He was initially hesitant to sing for films as he wanted to maintain the sanctity of his genre’s art. However, he decided to venture into the field and the first film song he sang was a Marathi song called Chand Pretticha.

In 1957, he started singing background vocals for Marathi and Gujarati films. He first dubbed for Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome and then sang “Sajanaa kahe nahi aaye…” for Badnaam Basti, directed by the same music director Vijay Raghav Rao. Apart from being a background vocal singer, he also played the role of Baiju Bawra in the German documentary Rain Maker, shot in Jaipur. He dubbed the protagonists of more than 70 documentaries produced by Films Division, many of which won national and international awards. He has performed all over the world, including India.

He has taught many of India’s most celebrated music stars and his students include Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, AR Rahman, Shaan and Sonu Nigam.

ARRahman shared the stage with his mentor during the show at Coca-Cola Studios.

Awards

In 1991, he received the Padma Shri and in 2006 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour. In 2003, the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama awarded him the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the country’s highest honour for a working artist.
