Divya Gokulnath is an Indian educator and entrepreneur. Divya is the co-founder of BYJU’S, India’s leading education technology company providing online learning courses for students in K-12 and exam preparation.
Under Divya’s leadership, BYJUS has become one of the most successful and sought-after EdTech startups in India. Divya has been recognized for her contributions in the field of education and entrepreneurship. She was named in the Forbes India Women Power Trailblazers list in 2019 and Fortune India’s 40 Under 40 list in 2020.
Divya was born in Bangalore, Karnataka on 21 April 1987. She will be 36 years old in 2023. Her star sign is Taurus.
Divya graduated from Frank Anthony Public School and later did her bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from RV College of Engineering, Bangalore. After graduation in 2007, she met Byju Raveendran, who was teaching her GRE test preparation class. As she would ask questions between classes, Byju encouraged her to become a teacher.
Divya’s father is a nephrologist at Apollo Hospitals and her mother is a production executive at Indian Television. She is the only child of her parents. Her father taught her science when she was a child.
Divya is married to Byju Raveendran. In April 2020, Divya moved in with 11 other family members including their youngest son and their second child was born in early 2021.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, she worked long hours in the office but during the lockdown, she started working from home. She told The Indian Express in 2021 that her typical day included juggling her son’s online class sessions, recording video lessons and spending time with her newborn.
Divya co-founded online education platform Byju’s with her husband in 2011. Initially, the company provided face-to-face education to supplement school education, and then launched an online app with video courses in 2015. Divya has appeared in teaching videos as a teacher. During India’s COVID-19 lockdown, Divya was responsible for user experience content and brand marketing. She was responsible for BYJU’s free access to educational content, allowing students to study at home during the pandemic.
Divya also blogs about the future of education and parenting, and women’s participation in STEM fields, and has been an advocate for closing the gender wage gap in India. She has also spoken to Mint Startup Diaries about the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, and co-authored an op-ed on Indian education technology for Vogue India with Byju Raveendran.
In March 2022, Gokulnath was appointed as the Chairman of the Education Technology Task Force of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Byju’s reportedly added 13.5 million users in March and April 2020, bringing the total to 50 million, and plans to reach 70 million students and 4.5 million subscribers by September 2020. According to Forbes, as of 2020, Divya’s husband Byju Raveendran and his brother Riju Raveendran have a combined net worth of $3.05 billion.

Divya agreed and started teaching. She taught students who were only four years younger than her. “I had to wear a sari because the students I taught were a little younger than me,” she said in an interview.
While she was teaching, her grades were announced and she was accepted by a university in the United States, but her conscience and love for teaching prevented her from going to the U.S. She stayed and continued to teach.
When she was a student, she fell in love with Byju and they got married.
