David Miller Controversy

David Miller, then 41, was ruled LBW by umpire Alim Dar in the 33rd over of South Africa’s innings when bowled by Glen Maxwell. After much debate, South African captain Faf du Plessis called for DRS, but a confused umpire Dar did not react. Miller then crossed his right arm over his left arm, which should have determined a DRS (both were fairly low to be conclusive). However, umpire Dar followed Miller’s crossed arm motion and chose to go upstairs. Tracking of the ball indicated that Miller would have survived if the ball had continued to miss the wicket and the ruling had been overturned.

So what exactly was the problem? It was a pretty big one, actually. According to the DRS policy, the batsman who was dismissed should make the final DRS call, clearly signalling to T, and not to anyone else, not even the non-batsman, captain or not. In this case, it was clear that du Plessis, the non-batsman, decided to use DRS and even signalled it. Miller did not look confident, and the on-field umpire was not persuaded by his crossed-arm gesture to call for DRS.

Although the time limit was again not fully adhered to, anchor Fox Sports paused the match as the clock was very tight with only 18 seconds remaining. The score Australia conceded was the highest since 2001, when South Africa scored 172 runs in the last 15 overs of their innings.
