Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar were the best female dubbing singers of the early 1960s. Asha sang for bitchy girls, temptresses and low-budget films. She sang more dubbed songs for Hindi films in the 1950s than anyone else. Most of the songs were sung in low-budget B or C grade films. Most of her early songs for AR Qureshi, Sajjad Hussain and Ghulam Mohammed were flops. She scored a big hit in Sajjad Hussain’s 1952 Sangdil. Hence, Bimal Roy allowed her to sing in Parineeta (1953). In Boot Polish (1954), she sang Nanhe Munne Bachche with Mohammed Rafi.
CID (1956) gave Asha a chance. In 1957, BR Chopra’s Naya Daur catapulted her to fame. Her duets with Rafi, Maang Ke Saath Tumhara, Saathi Haath Badhana and Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri, written by Sahir Ludhianvi, brought her fame. All the songs in the film were sung by her for the first time. Chopra cast her in Gumrah (1963), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), Aadmi Aur Insaan (1966) and Dhund (1973). Burman challenged her to change the music but she refused. After ten days of rehearsal, Aaja Aaja and other duets with Rafi like O Haseena Zulfonwali and O Mere Sona Re were hits. Film star Shammi Kapoor said, “If Mohammad Rafi hadn’t sung for me, I would have asked Asha Bhosle to do the job.” Bhosle and Burman had many hits and got married. In the 1960s and 1970s, she voiced for Hind film actress and dancer Helen in O Haseena Zulfon Wali. Helen attended her recording sessions to master the music and create the dance steps. Piya Tu Ab To Aaja (Caravan) and Yeh Mera Dil (Don) are more popular.
