Adopting lucky students who survived the flash flood in Lang Nu
These days, the news that teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang, Chairman of the Marie Curie School Board (Hanoi) decided to adopt all the children and students who were lucky enough to survive the terrible flash flood in Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province is receiving much admiration for his “golden” heart.

Over the past week, the pain of the entire Northern people after the impact of the storm and flood has made everyone shed tears, and Mr. Khang is no exception. But “just cry? What can I do to ease the pain? So I thought of a way I could do, which is to “adopt” the surviving children, to make up for it so that they can be warm, well-fed and have a good education”, that was Mr. Khang's thought. Listening to the stories of children who suddenly lost their parents or only had one parent, he could not help but feel sorry and urged him to do something.
At that time, Mr. Khang connected with and asked the authorities and the Department of Education and Training of Bao Yen district to make a list of children aged 15 and under who survived the flash flood. Mr. Khang and the Marie Curie school system (Hanoi) decided to “adopt” the children's education until they were 18 years old, by providing 3 million VND/child/month, transferred directly to their parents or guardians.
When he could not have a complete list because many people were still missing, he decided to immediately support the cases he had grasped. Among them was Nguyen Van Hanh, a 12th grade student at Bao Yen High School No. 1. After the flash flood in Lang Nu, Hanh lost his entire family and was left alone. Through Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong – Vice Principal of Bao Yen High School No. 1, Mr. Khang was able to connect with Hanh by phone.
The teacher asked Hanh in detail about his family situation, health status, and diet, then said: “You are one year older than my youngest grandchild. So, do you agree to let me accept you as my grandchild?” Hanh cried and said: “Yes, sir.”
Then the two grandfathers and grandsons, one in Hanoi, the other in the hospital being treated for injuries after the terrible flood in Lang Nu, whispered to each other to discuss the matter.

Through a media report, knowing that Hanh no longer wanted to go to school and would go to work to earn a living because of his uncertain future, “grandpa” said: “Now I will help you with enough money to study. Grandpa and your teachers all want you to continue to finish grade 12 and study further, do you agree?”. Hanh cried again: “I agree”.
Teacher Khang asked Hanh: “To have enough money for school, how much do you need each month?”. Hanh had never had to worry before so she was confused and didn't know how to answer. After talking with Hanh, Ms. Hong told Teacher Khang: “Up here, you kids can earn about 3 million a month, which is comfortable.”
Mr. Khang immediately “concluded” that he would give Hanh 3 million VND each month, and if he needed more, he would tell “grandpa”. He asked Ms. Hong to open a bank account for Hanh so that he could deposit money into that account every month. At the same time, he also asked her to help him buy a phone for Hanh so that the grandfather and grandchild could talk to each other occasionally.
In response to Mr. Khang's kindness, Hanh choked up with tears as she thanked him and promised to overcome the pain of losing her entire family, study hard to graduate from high school. As for what to study after that, Hanh asked “grandpa” to let her think more…”. Mr. Khang encouraged her: “You promised. Keep trying.”
Mr. Khang said that when he received the list of “Students swept away by floods” compiled by Phuc Khanh Primary and Secondary School No. 1 (Bao Yen district), Mr. Khang said: “Every time I look at that list, I cry.”
The list of 20 students in every grade has names highlighted in red and yellow. At the end of the list is a note: “Students highlighted in yellow are injured, students highlighted in red are deceased.” The number of students “highlighted in red” is up to 13, leaving only 7 students “highlighted in yellow”.
“The project to raise children and students of Lang Nu village after the flash flood” is what the teacher wishes to make up for, helping the future of the children who were lucky enough to survive but suffered a lot of damage to no longer be “blurred”.
This is not the first project that Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang has joined hands with the education sector in mountainous districts for sustainable development. Up to now, he has been implementing many charity projects for teachers and students in disadvantaged areas.

Many people asked Mr. Khang: “By doing this, what lesson do you want to convey to your students?”. Mr. Khang replied: “The lesson has been written in full and correctly in the 2018 General Education Program in the textbooks. I just do it so that my students can follow, that's all.”
Planting 40,000-50,000 trees at the border of the Fatherland
Looking back on the journey, in April 2021, the Prime Minister launched a project to plant 1 billion new trees in the period 2021-2025. At the end of 2021, Marie Curie School planted 20,000 Sa Moc trees (phase 1) in Khau Vai commune, Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province.
There are about 40,000 – 50,000 trees forming the Marie Curie area at the headland of the Fatherland – Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province.
“In our career of educating people, there is afforestation. And this afforestation will contribute positively to the career of educating people of the Marie Curie system,” said Mr. Khang, adding that in 2024, we will enter phase 2, planting 20,000 – 30,000 more cypress trees in this place.
Thus, starting with the name “Ten thousand trees for Meo Vac”, but when the project ends, there will be about 40,000 – 50,000 trees forming a Marie Curie area at the headland of the Fatherland, this not only helps Meo Vac to be covered with trees but also has an impact on the psychology of students and parents, contributing to protecting the environment and combating climate change.
Supporting English teachers for 3 consecutive years in Meo Vac
At the time of preparing to enter the new school year 2022-2023 when English is a compulsory subject from grade 3, Meo Vac district has 2,609 students with 76 grade 3 classes in 18 primary schools but only 25 English teachers, of which only one is an English teacher at the primary level.
In the context of the education sector, the “project of bringing English to Meo Vac” with dozens of teachers by Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang has left a strong impression.
With a duration of 3 periods/week/class x 35 weeks of actual study x 76 classes, the Marie Curie system has supported online English teaching for all grade 3 students of schools in Meo Vac district.
English teaching project for students in Meo Vac district of Marie Curie School
The interesting and effective nature of the project is that it not only excites students but also attracts the participation of many homeroom teachers and principals of schools in Meo Vac district to sit and learn English with students.
These are the things that create joy and motivation for Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang to continue implementing the project for another 2 years (2023-2024, 2024-2025) for this generation of students.
In particular, this project has spread everywhere, many places also follow Mr. Khang's method, for example, Lam Dong Department of Education and Training sent 16 English teachers to support online teaching for 16 grade 3 classes of 4 schools in the area and the “Green Steps” group in Ho Chi Minh City supported online teaching for 48 grade 3 classes of Meo Vac district.
In recognition of the project's great contributions, on the occasion of the opening of the new school year 2023-2024, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son presented a certificate of merit to Marie Curie School and teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang for their outstanding achievements in supporting online teaching of English for primary school students in the 2022-2023 school year.
At the opening ceremony of the 2023-2024 school year of Marie Curie School (Hanoi), leaders and representatives of the Department of Emulation and Reward, the Department of Primary Education and the Department of Organization and Personnel (Ministry of Education and Training) awarded certificates of merit from the Minister of Education and Training to the collective of Marie Curie School and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang personally for his outstanding achievements in supporting online teaching of English for primary school students in the 2022-2023 school year.
“Raising” 30 English majors
Having just launched the “project to bring English to Meo Vac”, the “calligrapher” from Nghe An could not bear to think about the project ending because Meo Vac still lacked teachers. “At the beginning of the school year (September 2023), I pondered and came up with the idea of training local people to become English teachers for Meo Vac to teach long-term. If it can be done, it will fundamentally solve the problem of teacher shortage not only in Meo Vac but also in other localities. The project is implemented in the form of “selection” and “socialization”. The District People's Committee selects and sends students to study English at university, after graduation, receives these teachers to teach English in their hometown.”he shared.
Mr. Khang named the project “Training English teachers for Meo Vac”.
Currently, there are 17 students participating in the project “Training English teachers for Meo Vac”
According to the commitment between the school and the People's Committee of Meo Vac district, the Marie Curie system will grant scholarships of 5-10 million/month/student for 4 years (depending on academic and training results), starting from December 2023. The project will “raise” 30 students, with an estimated cost of up to 6 billion – 12 billion VND. The People's Committee of the district will select 30 students who were born and raised in Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province to study English, and after graduation, will accept these teachers to teach English in their hometown.
Currently, there are 17 students participating in the project. Mr. Khang always tells the students: “I hope you will try your best to study to get the best results within your ability. After graduating, you will return to your hometown, and together with the current teachers, teach the students of the district. From now on, I will consider you as my own children and it is my responsibility as a father to take care of your children's education. You have become a member of the Marie Curie family.”
Building schools in border districts
The project of “raising” 30 students had just begun when Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang cherished the desire to build a school here that was large enough and spacious enough to narrow the gap between the lowlands and the highlands. This idea was shared by Mr. Khang right at the meeting when the leaders of the Ha Giang Education and Training Department and the People's Committee of Meo Vac district came to Marie Curie School to attend the signing ceremony of the “English teacher training project for Meo Vac district” in November 2023.
After that, Mr. Khang and the leaders of Meo Vac district discussed the new project, which Mr. Khang named: “Construction of Marie Curie – Meo Vac Boarding Ethnic High School” and agreed on the progress that in 2024, investment preparation will be done, in 2025 – 2026, basic construction will be done, expected to be completed and enrollment will start from the 2026 – 2027 school year. To build the school, the Marie Curie system will sponsor about 100 billion VND to build facilities and equipment for Marie Curie – Meo Vac Boarding Ethnic High School and at the same time, arrange counterpart funds to purchase equipment to serve the accommodation of boarding students.
Although spending billions of dong on projects, when sharing his wishes to help education in disadvantaged areas, Mr. Khang always did not want to emphasize how much money he had spent and would spend. Because Mr. Khang believes that for those with money, donating money may be the easiest way, but when projects are built, with goals and plans, investors will have to take responsibility to the end, even though they know there will be many difficulties and hardships. Therefore, in an open letter to teachers participating in teaching English to students in Meo Vac district, he said that the most important thing is still “the passionate fire in the heart” of each person when participating in this project because Mr. Khang believes that “if there is only the fire in my own heart, it is not enough…”.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang is from Nghe An, a former student of the Physics Department of Hanoi University. After graduating from university, Mr. Khang became a Physics teacher for the Physics specialized high school of the school. After retiring, he founded the Marie Curie Education System, including primary, middle and high school levels.
In his leadership role at Marie Curie School, Mr. Khang has made many creative innovations in teaching and learning management. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang is one of 10 outstanding individuals honored as Outstanding Citizens of the Capital in 2022.
