90% of distance learning students have graduated from college or university and are working

According to the research of a reporter from Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, in the 2024 – 2025 school year, Hanoi University enrolls students in distance education with 2 majors (Japanese Language, English Language).

Notably, the admission target for the English Language major at the distance learning system is more than 3 times higher than the target at the regular system.

Specifically, in the distance learning system, the English Language major has 1,300 targets. Meanwhile, the regular system has 300 targets in the standard program and 75 targets in the advanced program.

For the Japanese Language major, the school recruits 175 targets for the regular system and 100 targets for the distance learning system.

Sharing about the basis for determining targets for distance education, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Trao – Principal of Hanoi University said that the two majors English Language and Japanese Language are strengths in training. school creation.

With the capacity of the teaching staff, facilities as well as the strength of training majors in the field of humanities, in the 2024 – 2025 school year, Hanoi University has registered 1,400 enrollment targets for training programs from far (English Language major has 1300 targets, Japanese Language major has 100 targets) and approved by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Explaining the difference in enrollment quotas in the two training systems, Mr. Trao said that the distance learning program is inherently suitable for working people, so the determination of enrollment quotas is based on the school's needs. society's demand.

For the English Language major, the school currently has 3 specialized units with nearly 150 lecturers with appropriate qualifications and expertise who can participate in teaching distance learning programs.

In addition, the school also has its own unit responsible for administrative management of distance learners, the Distance Learning Center for Foreign Languages.

As for the regular system, the English Language major will be in charge of training by the English Department. Similar to the Japanese Language major, it is also in charge of the Japanese Language Department.

“In fact, more than 90% of students following the school's distance learning program have graduated from college or university and are now employed. Therefore, determining the enrollment quota for the distance education system that the school is implementing is in accordance with the Party and State's guidelines and policies on enhancing lifelong learning opportunities for learners in need.” , Mr. Trao informed.

To operate distance education, the Principal of Hanoi University said that the school has a team of managers and experts in charge of the distance education program and mobilizes the teaching staff of 3 units. English training unit of the school to ensure the ratio of full-time lecturers participating in the program according to regulations.

Accordingly, the team of lecturers, learning support staff, and management staff meet the requirements in terms of quantity, quality, qualifications and structure, and are trained in skills and online teaching methods. .

And the distance learning system will always be closely monitored by a team of learning advisors for each learner, learning progress is also regularly evaluated and attention is always paid to reviewing and adjusting the training program. The learning management work is scientifically and fully archived, and close attention is paid to survey work and receiving feedback from relevant parties.

On the other hand, the school ensures adequate facilities, equipment, libraries, and learning materials to implement the distance learning program, has an online learning management software system to provide learning materials, lectures for students.

The distance learning system only considers admission based on academic scores, what does the school say?

According to the reporter's research, for the distance learning system, Hanoi University only uses the admission method without organizing entrance exams.

Specifically, the school considers admission based on 3-year high school and intermediate school transcript scores; Scores in 03 subjects or average score at college level or higher (equivalent score).

The admission score is the total score of 03 subjects (Math + Literature + Foreign Language or equivalent), in which the scores of Math, Literature, and Foreign Language are taken from the average score of the 3-year subject in the high school transcript. pine.

Comparing with the 2024 distance education university admission list (phase 1) majoring in English language announced by the school on May 14, 2024, the reporter found that admission scores ranged from 16.1 – 28. .4 points (30 point scale), meaning candidates only need to score 5.5 points/subject to be admitted.

Meanwhile, in the regular university system, English Language majors are admitted based on the results of the high school graduation exam, on a 40-point scale.

In 2024, according to this method, the admission score for the English Language major in the standard program is at the top of the school with 35.43 points, and the advanced program is 33 points. Thus, candidates must achieve 8-9 points/subject to be admitted.

For the Japanese Language major, the admission score for the regular system according to the admission method based on the results of the high school graduation exam is 34.45 points (40 point scale). Meanwhile, admission scores for distance learning systems range from 16.17 – 22.63 points (30 point scale).

Regarding this issue, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Trao said that the distance learning program and the regular training program have the same training quality assurance threshold (floor score) of 16 points with 3 Math subjects. , Literature, Foreign Language.

Accordingly, the benchmark for admission to the distance learning program is the same as the regular training program, determined based on admission criteria, taken from high to low.

For the official form, admission to university only uses the results of the high school graduation exam of the year of admission. Meanwhile, most candidates registering for the distance learning program have graduated from high school, college or university many years ago, so using high school learning results will ensure Ensure stability and fairness in enrollment and conform to the enrollment method of the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Trao also said that the requirements of the distance learning program are equivalent to the regular program, forcing students to make efforts in studying to be able to complete the training program. Create and qualify for graduation.

In fact, this will contribute to ensuring that the quality of training in both systems is the same, without much difference. However, because students in the distance learning program are mainly working, there will be certain difficulties in maintaining learning quality. This leads to a relatively high rate of distance learning students dropping out (about 45% – 50%).

In previous school years, Hanoi University organized 4 admission rounds using the distance learning system. However, the 2024 – 2025 school year has changed when the school is shortened with 3 recruitment periods (April, September, December).

According to Mr. Trao, organizing 3 enrollment rounds/year allows students to have more time to properly arrange their personal work to participate in the course better. This is also convenient for the school's management and training organization.

After each enrollment period, the school classifies students according to their level (university, college, intermediate and high school) to organize appropriate training, ensuring students' ability to complete the program. training program within the specified time.

Students of the distance learning program are managed and evaluated as applied to regular students of the school, including attendance assessment, regular assessment and end-of-course assessment in accordance with the regulations in the syllabus. class period. Testing and evaluation activities are also organized directly at the school.

Difference in total credits in 2 training systems

According to the reporter's research, the total number of credits in Hanoi University's regular training program is 150 credits/course, while the distance learning program is 140 credits/course.

In addition, tuition fees for regular university credits range from 720,000 VND – 1,030,000 VND/credit; The distance learning system is generally applied at 500,000 VND/credit.

Explaining this, the Principal of Hanoi University said that the difference in the number of credits between the two training programs is because the school built a distance learning program aimed at students who have just graduated. Study while working, the vast majority have graduated from university, college or intermediate school.

Therefore, the modules are selected to suit the characteristics of learners and ensure they meet the training objectives and output standards of the training program.

For those who graduate from high school, they will have to study all the subjects of the university-level training program as prescribed. Those who have graduated from university or college will be considered for exemption from equivalent subjects accumulated from previous training programs.

Mr. Trao added that the output standards of the distance learning program serve as a guide for the process of designing the teaching program, and are the basis for choosing methods, teaching and learning activities and methods of evaluating results. learning outcomes of learners.

From there, the school determines the output standards of the distance learning program based on the output standards of the standard formal training program and meets the training goals, mission, and vision. At the same time, it demonstrates the school's transparency and accountability to relevant parties.

Because the level of use of facilities by students in the two training systems is different, tuition fees are also regulated differently.

In addition, because distance learning program students do not enjoy the same scholarship policies as regular students, the school has established a tuition policy for distance learning programs that is lower than that of the system. formal, aiming to attract and support learners to realize their desire to learn and develop professionally.

“Hanoi University's distance learning activities are carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the school. The distance learning program is built on the basis of the standard program and approved by the school's Science and Training Council before application. The training objectives and outcome standards of the course and the distance learning program are similar to those of the standard training program.

Currently, the school's distance learning program is led by full-time lecturers with doctoral degrees who are responsible for developing, organizing and teaching. The school arranges lecturers to participate in teaching the distance education program, which is implemented in accordance with the regulations in Circular No. 28/2023/TT-BGDDT promulgating the Regulations on distance education at university level, according to which the school The number of distance learning programs conducted by full-time lecturers of the school's 3 training units always reaches 75% or more”, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Trao informed.
